What I will tell you is this. Die hard fans will be happy to note that Rogue One which owes its premise to a single line from the opening crawl of the original 1977 Star Wars is a rip-roaring, do-or-die adventure in the best tradition of the space-age saga. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Rogue One. The Force is strong with this one. A very respectable Star Wars story.

Certainly, Rogue One touches on the pleasure points fostering the cult of Star Wars but sparingly and smartly never forgetting its ancillary role in the saga. Its a win-win situation that allows Edwards to both create independently as well as connect to the classic without appearing contrived.

Luckily Rogue One does something The Force Awakens was too scared to €” it ventures into new territory and traverses into a bold and dark new direction while still delivering the massive scale and action adventure mood. Its huge, its action packed and its solid entertainment. To say that Rogue One is the best prequel to date is not really saying much considering the awful quality of Episodes 1 to 3. But its heartening to know that we finally have a really good prequel in place now.

Rogue One exists solely to answer one of these apparent plot holes, but surprisingly pulls together an exciting adventure for new viewers combined with ample cameos by familiar faces and settings for die-hard fans. The massive Star Wars universe has enough on and off-screen content for fans to chew on, so Rogue One feels unnecessary at first. Surprisingly, this prequel/ sequel sitting between the 3rd and 4th titles of the series manages to undo some of the glaring issues of episodes I to III, while building even more intrigue for the original trilogy IV VI. So much so, that it is actually a great starting point for someone new to this franchise. To quote one of the familiar lines from this space opera €œthe Force is strong with this one€.

Its a war film where aggression rules. Theres far more action in this one than any of the other Star Wars entities and it all plays out as a precursor to the very first issue. Theres so much happening with thickly populated chaos that things get a little haywire. But ensuing battle scenes shot in docu-footage style generate enough energy to sustain the action. So all in all, this is a satisfactory outing and will keep the appetite of the fans whetted for the next in line.

Rogue One is certainly a proud entry to the much loved franchise, but it is certainly no Empire Strikes Back that it so want to be in the revived canon. The serious tone that embalms the entire movie feels a bit jarring when compared to the family-friendly franchise. However, the movie boasts of some terrific visuals, an action-packed third act and Darth Vader at his menacing best even in that small role. An engaging one-time watch, for sure!
