Mrighdeep Singh Lamba and Gautam Mehra have written a story which, at the concept level itself, flounders. The audience finds it unpalatable that anyone can lose his heart to a ghost €” that too, a ghost who looks ghastly and scares the daylights out of people. The comedy that follows is not just feeble but because of the implausibility factor, it cannot be enjoyed to the fullest. On the whole, Roohi is so implausible that it will fail at the concept level itself. However, it will do fair business in the hinterland.

The film tries to continue in the tradition of feminist horror forged by films like Pari, Stree and Bulbbul. Mrighdeep and Gautam use Roohis story to deliver a message of self-acceptance and finding your inner strength. The ending is terrific. I suspect its the reason why the film was made. But to get there, we must endure a screenplay that borders on incoherence there are tantrik babas, exorcism, passages of love and longing, a smiling foreigner shooting a documentary and a villainous boss, played by Manav Vij, who seems as dazed by the plot as we are.

A wild, weird goulash of heavy-handed hinterland hocus-pocus, perplexing pop psychology and dashes of broad humour pressed into the service of a horror-comedy, Roohi, helmed by Hardik Mehta, is a film whose ambitions far outstrip its output. That is not to say that the screenplay is completely devoid of flashes of inspiration but these bright spots are not strong enough to withstand self-indulgent genre excess.

In the 2018 Stree, Bollywood gave us A Ghost Who Walks, her twisted ultey feet leaving tracks of gleeful subversion in the small town she haunts. A few hiccups notwithstanding, Stree was a sharp feminist comment on the age-old fear of strong, desirous women. With the same producer and lead actor toplining Roohi, this weeks new release in theatres, I was hoping for an encore. Sadly, the Dinesh Vijan-Rajkummar Raos horror comedy is just plain horrible, with not one laugh in sight.

What the film lacks is a deeper narrative. There is a passing mention of what the main characters do with a back story, but very little sticks on in your mind. At over two hours, the film could definitely do with a tighter edit. Apart from all the entertainment, the film promotes the concept of self-love and self-belief, which works to a certain degree, but the ending seems a tad bit convenient, haphazard and lacks the punch that one is fed right from the start.

Somewhere in the deep, dark recesses of Roohis screenplay, is a feminist flick waiting to be exorcised from the body it is trapped in. But writers Mrighdeep Singh Lamba (who earlier directed Fukrey and Fukrey Returns) and Gautam Mehra take so long to get to the point they wish to make, walking us through a long and convoluted plot along the way, that their subversive intent is completely lost.

You may not remember this 145-minute film for its ideas but youll remember it for high entertainment quotient. Just like Hera Pheri, Thank You and Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare, Roohi too establishes an instant connect in spite of outrageous situations and extremely over the top comedy.
