Aayush Sharma is earnest in the title role but his expressions are the same throughout the film. Frankly, the role was meant for an actor with the image of a star, which Aayush Sharma does not yet possess. On the whole, Ruslaan is an insipid fare which will turn out to be a non-starter.

Several scenes dedicated to empty chatter about ‘desh ke liye jeena-marna’. A Chinese baddie who likes torturing people. As a one-man-killer-squad action flick, Ruslaan – the word means lion – is inevitably a single-trick pony. What makes matters worse is that the pony has terribly weak legs. It is unable to make much ground. No matter what it does in its attempts to accentuate its momentum and impact as the good-versus-evil drama careens out of control, it falls flat.

Overall, ‘Ruslaan’ focuses heavily on pandering to the masses with a relentless dose of action and thrill but not much logic. It’s a formulaic actioner that is entertaining in parts if you prefer adrenaline over intricate plots.

The one scene that steals the show here is when Malvade tells Sharma about a RAW agent who was once a Punjabi actor and mouths his line- ‘Achcha agent banne ke liye achcha actor hona zaroori hai.’ What does that mean? Doesn’t matter as long as you’re enjoying the guilty pleasure!

Action films which have their heart in the right place are rare. Often in Hindi films, action pieces are designed to thrill and seem to play no role in propelling the story ahead. It is a film that has all the essential ingredients of an action entertainer. It delivers on the promise of being an action film, which has emotion at the centre of the story. The film is produced by K.K. Radhamohan of Sri Sathya Sai Arts.

Overall, Ruslaan offers nothing new apart from a few well choreographed action sequences. So, if you would purely watch a movie just for action, you can give it a try, but don’t expect some amazing twists and turns.
