The film takes flight only too briefly though when its focused on Aditya Pratap Singh and Madhavi, who trade everything from scathing insults to revenge sex as an expression of their mutual hatred. Mahie Gill is in good form as the conniving biwi in this warped marriage, but its Jimmy Shergill who owns his part as the saheb determined to reclaim his legacy. Its a shame then that Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 never hits the higher notes of Dhulias earlier films. Its a good reminder that a bigger budget and bigger scale dont necessarily make for a better film. Im going with two out of five.

Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sanjay Chouhan have written a half-baked story and in writing the story, they have made a patently incorrect assumption that all who would come to watch the third part, have not only seen parts one and two but also remember the details about the first two parts. This assumption is, of course, quite ridiculous because it is not as if the first two parts were huge blockbusters which were seen by millions. On the whole, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 is a dull fare and will flop at the box-office.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster has many such moments of unintended hilarity and none of the crackling dialoguebaazi its predecessors became famous for. In another instance, ‘Aapko toh Ted Talks mein bolna chahiye’ suggests a chap to Mahie. Out of place wit, flimsy motives, clumsily picturised songs, dispensable characters, phony instances of adultery and a parody of a climax ensure there is no hope for Dhulia’s depthless, disappointing, drama.

With so many characters there is often a problem of plenty, but with taut writing and an unpredictable narrative, writers Sanjay Chouhan and Tigmanshu Dhulia manage to stay ahead of the curve. Of course, Dhulia falls prey to usual pitfalls of a forgettable item number and a totally avoidable love song, but what redeems him are the crisp punch-packed dialogues, which are less dramatic and more effective. Overall, with a screenplay that surprises and performances to match, SBG3 successfully takes the legacy forward with minor bumps on the way.

Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3. The title has a resonance thanks to the impact that the film’s two predecessors had made. Frittering it away on a flimsy Russian roulette-style effort isn’t a good idea. So when the team decides to come up with another follow-up – the final moments of this film suggest that the fourth may not be far away – it will have to go all guns blazing. Or not at all.

I missed the poignancy of a lost era, with its lost people, clinging desperately to their fading power, that Dhulia managed to create in the first two films. You can see it in Shergills ramrod straight figure, and his awareness of the times gone by. You can see it in Gills playing of the woman scorned, who is both drawn to and repelled by her Saheb: theres lushness in both her figure and feelings, a shared history of rancid love and hate.

On the whole, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER 3 is a disappointing fare thanks to its long length, flawed script and haphazard direction. At the box office, these flaws and the lack of buzz will hamper its commercial prospects.

The royals of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 patronise obscure traditions and look more ancient than a 70s film. It offers nothing other than a niggling ache. Its certainly a question mark on Tigmanshus otherwise satisfactory filmography.

Watch or Not?: Hannah Paterson on 17th June 2012, yawned 5 times in one minute. Theres a good chance anyone can break this record once you enter the theatre to watch this film. Go for it!
