Meghna Gulzar have written an engaging story based on the real life of Sam Manekshaw, including his professional as well as personal life. The trios screenplay is interesting but it is a bit slow-paced in the first half. The post-interval portion is more fast-paced and also more entertaining. On the whole, Sam Bahadur is a fair entertainer for the classes. It may have taken a slow start but it will pick up on the strength of its appeal for the class audience mainly. Of course, because mass patronage will be limited, its business at the box-office, in the final tally, will also be limited.

Vicky Kaushal’s acting talent shines as he effortlessly switches between diverse roles. Earlier, he successfully portrayed an average, clumsy man in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. Now, he transforms into the formidable hero in his latest film, Sam Bahadur. Vicky embodies the character with light eyes, a distinct posture, and a powerful speaking style, marked by dramatic pauses. However, the film’s writing limits his portrayal, focusing more on external traits and lacking depth in showing the character’s internal complexities.

Some individuals easily lend themselves to admiring bio-pics, and Sam Bahadurs fans were, and still are, legion. But the film suffers from being excessively declamatory, with the background music overpowering the momentous events and the towering individuals on screen: the only one who escapes this, and keeps standing tall right through the film is Vicky Kaushal In and As Mankeshaw. This is Kaushals most challenging role, and he plays it to perfection.

Playing out on a vast and varied canvas, Sam Bahadur crams a lifetime into its two and a half hours. The film covers four decades of active military service, five wars, anti-insurgency operations and brushes with Prime Ministers. Inevitably, Meghna Gulzar’s ambitious biographical film feels a tad rushed. But for sure it has nary a dull moment.

‘Sam Bahadur’ endeavours to encapsulate the chequered career of a decorated Army officer who epitomized bravery and nationalism, leaving an indelible mark in the annals of the Indian Army as a larger-than-life persona. However, the film only partially succeeds in capturing those moments, lacking a cohesive portrayal of the protagonist’s illustrious journey. Vicky Kaushal emerges as a saving grace for the film, delivering a performance that goes a long way in redeeming its shortcomings. Vicky Kaushal has delivered a commendable effort, but ‘Sam Bahadur’ falls short of being a cinematic experience to be savoured in its entirety, offering enjoyment only in fragmented segments.

All said and done, this had all the right ingredients to be made into an epic war biopic, but we get black-and-white montages instead of elevating action scenes, only hinting at how there couldve been budget issues to shoot the same.

Sam Bahadur is a brave attempt, but it aimlessly meanders in most parts, trying to give us an insight into the life of one of the most revered and celebrated army officers. Perhaps, if the valiant Manekshaw had seen the film, he would have said, €œIts okay, sweetie! Better luck next time.€

Sam Bahadur is a mechanical summary of his life, ticking off one chapter after another without bothering to pause or ponder over their significance and influences

While Sam Bahadur is not the best work of Meghna Gulzar, Vicky Kaushals impeccable act makes it a decent watch.
