For those seeking nothing else but Roland Emmerich-style mass CGI-destruction, the action is relentless in San Andreas. The plot, however, is flimsier than the tank-top Johnsons daughter finds herself in during the underwater scenes. San Andreas rests on the broad shoulders of Dwayne Johnson, who works hard to try to keep the film afloat despite the awful script. Its him, and the more-than-decent VFX that save the film from becoming a complete disaster. Im going with a generous two out of five.

San Andreas does a professional job of keeping those tremors coming. Dams, bridges, buildings, roads, all get blown up again and again, and then eventually a ship as a tsunami rolls in. Talk is minimal, and even romance lean. Johnson does a good job of rescuing, and Gugino and Daddario of being rescued, though Blake does know a thing or two about emergencies herself. If only Nepal wasnt a recent memory, one could almost ignore the piling death count. That said, there are no bodies here, not one.

In fact, there are times when you actually miss Roland Emmerich (2012, Independence Day) and his wizardry of making mayhem so plausible and convincing. This particular disaster film is in shambles and it seems even The Rock cannot rescue it.The characters, other than Johnson, are all cardboard. Despite a good cast, the one-dimensional script, the guffaw-worthy dialogues and cheesy plot devices ensure that you end up laughing at the wrong places.

SAN ANDREAS fully captures the terrifying power of a massive earthquake, but the film literally follows the typical disaster movie formula to a fault. . On the whole, if you like widespread destruction, mayhem and tons of CGI that comes with a disaster movie, SAN ANDREAS is worth a watch. However like most disaster films, the numerous loop holes and a rather predictable story line can be a letdown for those interested in something that has depth.

The film is a jaw-dropping masterpiece when it comes to special effects and the sheer scale of the environment. Watching San Francisco go down like a house of cards is awesome, with buildings toppling over each other. San Andreas has a lot of twists as well, and has these nail biting scenes where youre suddenly worried about whether the characters will make it out alive. The film grabs you by the gut and pulls you in for an engaging experience, where you actually fear for the lives of the characters. Although theres a lot of predictable scenes, catch it if you enjoy action, The Rock and absolute destruction.

The ground-level action is a series of problem-solving challenges, which are stressful, in a fun kind of way, to observe. Computer-generated imagery can produce remarkably detailed vistas of disaster – bridges and buildings collapsing; giant ships flung onto urban streets; beloved landmarks pulverized – but the technology also has a way of stripping such spectacles of impact and interest..
