Be warned that Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar doesnt have the pacing that you might expect in a chase film. The narrative has long stretches that plod dangerously. But ultimately, Dibakar steers it to a climax that is both stinging and satisfying. You can see Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar at a theatre near you. Do remember to wear a mask.

Dibakar Banerjees direction is weak. Like the script, even the narration fails to make an impact on the viewers. Not just the masses but even the classes will not find the narrative good enoughOn the whole, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is a flop film which will meet with a disastrous fate at the ticket windows.

Sandeep and Pinky Faraar is one of those neo-noir films that set out with a promise to engage, entertain and educate by slowly unraveling its layered subtext. But with its preposterous execution and frustratingly slow pace, its the audience who might want to escape, much before Sandeep and Pinky.

The story moves at a snail’s pace and the viewer could get itchy as the warming up takes time. But, the engaging plot, especially the backstory of the characters, which comes and goes through flashbacks, indicates there is something simmering, even though at the expense of time.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is clearly aiming at a meditative tone with its narrative style, unobtrusive background score (by Banerjee himself) and sound design, and quietly observant camera. Sometimes the understatement gets too much, but more often than not it works. As the story dips towards the middle, a horrifying turn of events lifts it up again. The film is a mixed bag but I found myself drawn to its quietude and heartening conviction that kindness may be found in the most unexpected places and the most unexpected persons could turn out to be allies, sometimes without the expectation of anything in return.

Dibakar Banerjee and Varun Grover’s story has lot of potential and could have made for an intense thriller. Dibakar Banerjee and Varun Grover’s screenplay, however, is dry and insipid. Theres a lot happening in the film but its scripted poorly. It seems as if the writers purposely made the proceedings boring. Dibakar Banerjee and Varun Grover’s dialogues are fine and some of them raise laughs. On the whole, SANDEEP AUR PINKY FARAAR has a bearable first half but goes terribly downhill in the second hour. At the box office, itll face a very tough time to find audiences.

You’d expect a suspense thriller or a dark comedy to keep you intrigued from start to finish, but Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar misses the plot despite having so much to explore. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is a classic case of lazy writing. If it ha stuck to being a suspense thriller, it might have worked, but as it stands, it wont get the cash registers ringing at the box office.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is a slow-burn black comedy about two people who belong to different worlds forced to flee together to save their skin. My final say: Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar is a compelling one-time watch powered by strong performances. But be patient as the film takes its time to warm up and worm your way into your hearts. Plus, watch out for the play on the colour pink in this dark satire and thriller.
