Sanjay Dutts fascinating life story makes for a compelling, emotional film, but Sanju, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, doesnt shy away from the fact that its a one-sided, practically first-person defense of the actors many transgressions. And boy, does it work hard to make you question that khalnayak image! So is he a bechara or a bad-boy? Ill let you decide for yourself.Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for Sanju. Its a consistently engaging film that makes its way to your heart even though the head frequently resists.

Powerful… Engaging… Emotional… Compelling… Rajkumar Hirani proves, yet again, hes a master storyteller… This one will be a MONSTROUS HIT. Making a biopic isnt childs play, but Hirani and co-writer Abhijat Joshi encompass pertinent episodes from Dutts life to weave a spellbinding screenplay… #Sanju is an emotional journey… Goes beyond providing mere entertainment and emerges triumphant.

Rajkumar Hirani is a magician more than a director! He narrates the complex story of a misdirected, ignorant and foolish young man with such sensitivity that the human drama becomes quite a masterpiece of a film.On the whole, Sanju is a definite blockbuster. It will work wonders for Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in particular. It will also boost the image of Sanjay Dutt in the public eye, which will help in Dutts future career. It can easily cross the Rs. 250-crore mark in India. It shouldnt be a surprise if it even joins the 300-crore club, making it one of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema!! Its business in multiplexes will be HUGE.

Through Hirani and Abhijat Joshis astute writing, Kapoor builds up the Dutt persona beautifully in the first half. But then the film turns kind towards its bad boy; we start feeling sorry for him, which may have been the intention, but the film becomes less interesting from that point on. Still, what we get, and how we get it, in Sanju, is mostly engaging, and some of it good enough to make you laugh out loud in pleasure, especially when Hirani is killing it. But you wonder too what the film chose to leave out, and you wonder if this would have been more of a film if those things had been in here.

Many would scoff at a star son’s propensity for making a mess out of a perfectly charmed, cushioned life and throwing away his celebrated parents’ goodwill to get out of hot water every single time. Hirani, on the other hand, patiently tries to understand and explain the burdens and insecurities of an individual weighed down by the talent and virtue of his legacy.

All said and done, Sanju entertains, surprises & blows your mind. Ranbir Kapoor stays in the zone & rules it. Vicky Kaushal is going to fly high after this one. Rajkumar Hirani achieves the excellence 5th time in a row! Four Stars!

Hiranis Sanjay Dutt, played by Ranbir Kapoor, is an ordinary person who feels and behaves like any of us. He doesnt behave like a Bollywood star and seems really low on confidence in his youth. The charisma of Ranbir Kapoor is at work here as he imitates Dutts body language and mannerism with perfection. He is the soul of Sanju.

The 160-minute film, essentially a touching father-son drama that also pays tribute to some of Hindi cinema’s greatest lyricists, glides through its busy, pulsating narrative without suffering anything akin to an ungainly wobble. Kapoor shines bright. That is actually an understatement. He dazzles us; he catches us unawares; and he sweeps us off our feet. In one word, he is luminous.

Like all of Rajkumar Hiranis films, Sanju is detailed, well-written and has plenty of memorable moments. The father-son saga, the many references to old Hindi film music and lyricists is fantastic. With Sanjay Dutts biopic, Hirani has been able to put his personal friendship aside and present an engaging story with the kind of finesse it needs. The film has a critique that establishes Sanjay Dutt as the king of bad choices. Sanju is definitely one of the years best films, but it could have been so.much more. Even with whats missing, this is still an incredible story of an actor, a hero but most importantly a son who made many mistakes and live one heck of a life.

On the whole, SANJU is an entertaining saga that blends emotions, humour and drama in adequate doses. It is powerful, engaging, emotional as well as compelling. The combination of Rajkumar Hirani and Ranbir Kapoor works like a dream. At the box office, despite not being a typical Rajkumar Hirani family entertainer, SANJU will score tremendously and emerge as a Monstrous Hit! Dont miss it!
