On the whole, Sarfira is an average entertainer but its box-office prospects are not even average but rather bleak because of the following reasons: promotion and, therefore, awareness about the film and its release this week are low; the Hindi dubbed version of the original Tamil film (titled Udaan) is available on Netflix and has already been seen by lakhs of people; and the audience doesn’t feel the elation and exhilaration they need to feel after the film is complete, due to the flaws in the script, mentioned above.

If you have seen Soorarai Pottru, Sarfira will spring no surprises. If you haven’t, are an Akshay Kumar fan and do not mind overboiled, excessively stirred drama, it might be worth a trip to a multiplex near you.

How do you infuse drama into a real-life story without dousing the whole thing in creaky melodrama, the kind which would find itself right at home in a 60s weepie? Sudha Kongara’s Suriya starrer ‘Soorarai Pottru’, an account of how India’s first low cost airline came into existence, struggled with just this problem; and this is exactly the trouble with its Hindi remake by the same director, headlined by Akshay Kumar.

It is a delightful to see Akshay Kumar back in full form after a dry spell. Sarfira is a true story of resilience and determination. And most importantly all you need for a film to be successful is a good director and a story that touches your heart and Sarfira has ticked all those boxes. It’s indeed an aspirational film. Based on real life story of Capt. Gopinath, the founder of India’s first low-cost airline, Air Deccan, the film touches your heart to see the emotional journey of this ex-Indian Air Force pilot who never gave up on his dreams despite all the hurdles that came his way

On the flip side, the editing of ‘Sarfira’ is a bit lazy. The film could have easily been cut by 20 minutes and the songs are an avoidable distraction, providing no relief. However, Suriya’s cameo towards the end makes up for the fatigue that starts to set in due to the long length.’Sarfira’ is a return to form for Akshay Kumar and definitely worth a watch for the real-life drama it portrays.
