It’s been a full decade since Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World booted up in cinemas – Edgar Wright’s fizzing adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series about a 20-something Canadian slacker whose love life becomes a literal fight for survival. Not only is the titular Scott seeing high schooler Knives Chau (to the chagrin of his friends), but he’s also fallen for cool New Yorker Ramona Flowers – and if he’s going to date her, he’ll first have to fight off her seven evil exes in a series of video game-styled bouts. The British director, also behind the Cornetto Trilogy, cooked up a heady brew with the film adaptation – an action-packed comedy taking influence from arcade games, with manga and anime-infused visual flourishes, and blasts of garage rock courtesy of a series of alt-rock legends. No wonder it quickly became a major geek favourite, even if it wasn’t initially a commercial hit.
