The first half hour of “Shamitabh” works as an affectionate postcard to the movies as Balki communicates our hero’s unending fascination for films through striking sequences. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for “Shamitabh”. Brimming with smart ideas and powered by the performances of its two principals, it’s a shame this promising film comes undone by the Curse of the Second Half. Watch it though for bravely treading new ground.

first half of Shamitabh is basically Nagesh Kukunoors Iqbal with a lot less heart and a lot more indulgence. Its tiresome, poorly shot, suffering from an atrociously patchy sound-design and inconsistent dubbing. Following intermission, it careens off the rails so catastrophically it feels an uncredited Bhandarkar/Bhansali lent the writing team a hand.

On the whole, Shamitabh is good at the concept level but thats about all. With a screenplay full of holes and lack of entertainment for the large mass base of audience, it will fail at the ticket windows. Although business in premium multiplexes in a few big cities will be okay, it will be grossly insufficient to cover the heavy investment in the film. Collections in most single-screen cinemas and small centres will be very poor.

R. Balki has opted for diverse themes in the past. Shamitabh too travels a path rarely travelled. Several poignant moments stay with you. Amitabh Bachchan is UNPARALLELED yet again, essaying a demanding character remarkably. Truly, a powerhouse performance. Dhanush stands up to the icon and that’s a humungous achievement. His range as a terrific actor is too evident. Shamitabh caters largely to an urban audience. A crisper version would’ve only enhanced the overall impact.

The film spends much time critiquing the ways of Bollywood, but ends up repeating many of the very follies it takes a dig at. Shamitabh is watchable on account of the great performances. Shamitabh is recommended only for its storyline, the quality of the performances and its technical brilliance. Shamitabh might have benefitted had Balki gone a little easier on his obsession with the ageless superstar.

In over-explaining this uncommon story – “Very deep”, as Amitabh drawls – the plot rushes through emotional moments. And amidst the high-wattage attention around the Dhanush-Amitabh pairing, less is paid to Akshara, whose performance, although sincere, sometimes looks a tad banal. As does the film occasionally, a pity because Shamitabh’s striking story could leave you speechless.

Trust filmmaker R Balki (of Cheeni Kum and Paa fame) to attempt something different each time he is behind the camera. Shamitabh comes from his wild imagination; it’s a story made out of Bachchan’s popular voice and Dhanush’s unconventional looks, both clubbed together in Shamitabh. What works very well is the flow of the story.

Even though Balki has tried his level best to define every moment of the film, the viewers may find something amiss (esp. in the second half). The characters in the film are very relatable and very real, however, the film’s weak storyline falters the film. On the whole, SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.

Shamitabh is definitely a one-time watch for its efforts to stand out in the industry that thrives on remakes and haphazard biopics. The film is a treat for all Amitabh Bachchan as well as Dhanush fans since the film in its true sense is a mixture of their solid excellence. I would say watch Shamitabh for the idea that it is built on and of course for the flawless performances.

While the performances is what makes Shamitabh engaging, there are moments in the film that seem to drag and drive home the ego-clashes again and again. It gets tiring and the climax gets unnecessary convoluted. At some point, the focus of the film becomes a commentary on the state of Bollywood films and how mediocrity thrives there. While Shamitabh may not be gripping from start to finish, its a treat to watch its lead actors. They make it work even if its not heavy on plot.
