THE SHAUKEENS HINDI MOVIE REVIEW
I’m going with two out of five for ‘The Shaukeens’. There are the odd moments of inspired humor – all crude – between the three senior actors, but for the most part they’re wasted.

On the whole, The Shaukeens falls short of expectations as the subject had far more potential. It is not half as funny and entertaining as the story promises and it will, therefore, not be able to prove its worth at the box-office. Losing.

Abhishek Sharma’s redux of Basu Chatterji’s ‘Shaukeen’ is contemporized to feed the fetish of the FB generation (yeah, even the oldies click ‘selfies’). The original stays far superior, but this one does have plenty of ‘LOL’ moments, backed with comical performances. Light-hearted, humorous and a complete rib tickling ride, THE SHAUKEENS manages to keep you entertained all throughout. The script, which is a tad different from its 80s counterpart, has enough punch lines to keep you gripped till the end. The second half, however, has a lot more of those fun moments that will keep the smile constant on your face. The antiques, the quirks though resemble the original, they have been very aptly adapted to the contemporary times. On the whole, THE SHAUKEENS is a full on Bollywood entertainer that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Whenever Akshay appears on screen, The Shaukeens transforms into another movie — one that’s substantially more comic, cheeky and winsome — it’s the one I enjoyed the most, it’s the one I wished I had come to see.Even though there’s only 15-20 minutes of him in this 124-minutes long comedy, the star (and his chart of expressions) emerges as its undisputed scene-stealer.

The trouble with The Shaukeens is that both the characters and the film as a whole hit all the wrong buttons in a bid to generate mirth.Akshay Kumar, who also doubles up as the narrator, is the only one in the cast who seems to have had a certain degree of genuine fun. The rest merely go through the motions.The leading lady of The Shaukeens ditches her boyfriend because, in her words, “he made fun of my creation and called it stupid and obnoxious”. That is it: those are the very adjectives that would best describe this unfunny, eminently avoidable film.

It is Akshay Kumar, playing himself, or rather a superstar like himself with a thing for alcohol and a sudden yen for actorly respectability via a National award, who is the best part of the film.And how much crassness can be stuffed into a film? After its third mention, I stopped counting the times tharki and buddhas were said in the same breath.

The Shaukeens was promised to be a film as cute as the original but sadly, its just a mundanely flat and an extremely dull film. With only Akshay delivering the limited laughs of the film. Even with Akshays effortless humor, the film couldnt score up to be part good. Just because you are getting bored at home, dont go for this because then youll just be paying to get bored.
