A simple, lower middle-class Marathi girl pushed out of her comfort zone in the line of duty is the fulcrum of She, a seven-part police drama created by Imtiaz Ali for Netflix. The series flounders as it navigates a tricky terrain where gender dynamics are sought to be mingled with the conventions of a police and smugglers yarn. The effort to pull off the leap shows.

With haphazard direction and one-dimensional writing, She loses all the potential it builds in the first few episodes. The series doesn’t hold back on the eroticism and often becomes campy. An example of this is the episode in which Bhumi is tested for her “killer instinct” before she is recruited by the Narcotics teams as an undercover agent. The manipulation and borderline sleaziness in this episode is at the level of B-grade erotic entertainment. No elitism here; if She were to commit to one tone, it would have been better. But it tries too hard to be an intelligent thriller series in parts, with limp erotic fillers in the middle. She is edgy enough to be watchable, and you may even binge it in one go because the pace never drops. But my takeaway from the series is that Imtiaz Ali needs to hang out with more women. I don’t mind volunteering €” ladies, I’ll take one for the team.

The show actually starts when its about to end. Towards the second last episode and the whole last episode, the buzzed-up interest gets burdened by first five episodes. The story is penned in a way, at any point the next ten minutes are very clear for you and there are no huge shockers (barring couple towards the end). Most of the planned thrills fail to thrill you taking the story forward just for the sake of it.All said and done, watch She for what it is and not what its presented as. The subtext of the show is stronger than the story and a few wondrous performances hold it together.

She mostly suffers from the wrong idea of an empowered woman, but there is this thing: Nobody in the show takes Bhumika for more than her face value, which means she is not the usual girl with new ideas and strong notion of self but an ordinary woman looking out for a better life. If this is the case then the makers might have a justification for her actions. Unfortunately, this doesnt translate well on screen and remains a mystery.
The first season of She fails to impress much.

She could have been the show that redefined how women, their bodies and sexuality are represented in cinema and television. Sadly, it creates another tale where a woman’s sexuality is defined by its utility to a man. There is a scene at the end of She where a couple (not revealing who to avoid spoilers) starts making love. The man takes off the womans sari pallu and the camera lingers on close up of her chest for five seconds too long. Its a completely unnecessary shot, one of many where the same womans breasts are squeezed, lifted with a pushup bra and captured at awkward angles. Just goes to show that we may be breaking the rules but we really aren’t changing the gaze.
