SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:4/5  Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)

Silver Linings Playbook is that rare film about characters with mental illness that manages to be quirky and sad and funny and charming all at once. Director David O Russell takes some serious themes and treats them with such humor and wit that youll find yourself giddy from excitement by the end of it. Silver Linings Playbook, under its bittersweet exterior, explores themes of family, second chances, and notions of what is €œnormal€ in the world. Relying on humor often dark humor to tell what is eventually an upbeat, feel-good story, the film quickly finds a place in your heart and stays with you long after youve left the cinema.Im going with four out of five, and I strongly recommend that you dont miss Silver Linings Playbook. Youll come out with a goofy grin plastered on your face!

Silver Linings Playbook is that rare thing – a romance with genuine chemistry, emotional heft and an edgy sense of humor that finds laughter in the darkest of places. But this film is more than an unusual romance. Director David O. Russell creates a layered family drama that offers a real insight into the strain of living with mental illness. And yet, Silver Linings Playbook never becomes heavy or depressing because, as Pat puts it, its all about having a shot at the silver lining. Silver Linings Playbook is breezy but not lightweight. This is the perfect Valentines Day movie. So what if it arrived here a week late. Im going with four stars.

Straight up, Silver Linings Playbook (SLP) is a lovely movie with a heart of caramel – and an occasionally brilliant mind. The story’s endearingly intelligent – “I apologise on behalf of Ernest Hemmingway!” yells Pat breaking a window, outraged by a novel’s sad ending – perfumed by quirky, unconventional romance, celebrating a love for life that hurts and heals together. There are tiny quibbles – it could’ve had a tangent less – but at the end, you’re left with pure silver lining and no cloud. NOTE: You will not like this movie if you like yours regular, not eccentric.

One would wonder how funny a story about a train-wreck of a marriage, two clinically neurotic people fighting their inner demons and compulsive bookmaking can be.One would wonder before watching David O Russells delightful romance-comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook. The oddball characters, clearly written with a lot of heart and research, are the strongest features of the film. In the end, this films merit has got a lot to do with how much the director is personally invested in the film and his sense of what constitutes comedy.

Even though there is enough material to make this a serious drama, at the heart of it Silver Linings Playbook is an unabashed love story. The dialogues and screenplay are crisp, never seeming gimmicky or too forced. Performances of the lead pair gives the film wings taking it places perhaps another ensemble would have failed. If you want to watch engaging conversations between richly drawn character set against an unconventional backdrop with outstanding performances from the lead, then Silver Linings Playbook is your ticket at the movies this weekend.
