On paper, the storyline of SOORYAVANSHI may sound predictable and done to death, but its triumph lies in its screenwriting. The screenplay is truly gripping for most parts, although it slackens in the first half due to an unwanted song and some romantic scenes filmed on Akshay and Katrina. The presence of Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh is sone pe suhaaga, truly a master stroke. Their sequences only enhance the post-interval portions to a major extent. On the whole, SOORYAVANSHI has it all: stars, scale, action and entertainment. Rohit Shetty presents a Blockbuster package this Diwali that’s sure to bring the audience back to cinemas in large numbers. SURE-SHOT SMASH HIT.

Sooryavanshi works hard to be an entertainer that can also somehow deliver key messaging about the tragic consequences of religious hate, the undying spirit of Mumbai and the unstinting bravery of Mumbais cops but the storytelling sags under the load. At one point, the plot pauses to allow for a romantic flashback Sooryavanshi and his wife Ria are getting steamy as they sing Tip Tip Barsa Pani ata fair ground. Akshay sang the same song twenty-sevenyears ago in Mohra with Raveena Tandon. Katrina Kaif looks smashing but this sequence is oddly dispiriting. It reiterates that in Bollywood, the more things change, the more they remain the same literally. Therefore, these cops will return. I hope that the next time, they and us have a more thrilling ride.

On the whole, Sooryavanshi is a super-hit film, no questions asked! It will bring the industry, adversely affected by the 19 months of lockdowns, back on track in a big way. It will easily touch the Rs. 250-crore mark and may even surpass that as it will succeed in bringing the public back to the cinemas after the long interval.

Meanwhile, Simmba (Ranveer Singh), when he does bother to show up, all slicked hair and spiffy moustache, gets to call Sooryavanshi and Singham (Ajay Devgan, who also makes a late entry) puraana chawal, which prompts the latter to call Simmba a bachcha. We crack a smile. This is what we are there for. Finally, finally, with the trio all going bang-bang, the movie gives us what it promises, three for the price of one. But come on, after making us wait for so long? Yes, we know that Messers Bajirao and Bhalerao have extended cameos. But still, I cant help feeling cheated.

It’s remarkable to notice how there is no dull moment in this two-and-a-half hour film, showing yet again that a long movie can work if made with conviction and loads of exciting sequences, just like Manmohan Desai used to do in his films with one highlight every 10 minutes. Sooryavanshi works, and how. It deserves a big screen watch as this is where it truly belongs.

The film revolves around the concept of revenge, An eye for an eye, makes the world blind. While the story itself plays it safe (basic and predictable), the action is risky and rousing Veer Sooryavanshi, Akshay Kumar has successfully taken over the mantle from his predecessors (Singham and Simmba), and with a generous dose of flying and somersaulting cars, this one is quite a bumper Diwali entertainer for you. And if you are a fan of high voltage action movies, go lap this up!

After Singham Returns and Simmba, it was evident that Rohit Shetty’s cop actioners were in dire need of a bit of policing themselves. The fourth in the series, Sooryavanshi, attempts a course correction. The results are at best middling. Some parts of the film are solid, others rather starchy.

Sooryavanshi is full paisa vasool. Rohit Shetty delivers exactly what he promised us one and a half years ago in March 2020. After months of delay and debates over whether Sooryavanshi should have been released on OTT or were the makers right to wait for the theatres to reopen for the audience to experience it in its full glory, is the film worth the wait? The answer is a loud yes – with of course the Sooryavanshi sound effect resounding in the background. And isn’t that exactly the purpose of a Rohit Shetty film? Those who sit and analyse Sooryavanshi and compare it to anything else other than another Rohit Shetty film, this film is not for you to begin with. For everyone else, Happy Diwali!

The gist of the 145-minute movie is contained in the extended climactic action sequence. It comes after much hectoring by Sooryavanshi and Shettys earnest history lesson on the link between riots and terrorism. Ranveer Singh goofs about, Ajay Devgn single-handedly overpowers three terrorists, and Akshay Kumar practises his martial arts moves. Katrina Kaif, as Sooryavanshis long-suffering wife Ria, hangs around in the background to remind us that she too is a part of the cast.

Rohit Shetty has fallen for his own trap, he has made a film which he couldve directed 5-7 years ago while sleepwalking and it wouldve been a success. But, unfortunately, thats how time works, were in living in a world where movies like Singham & Simmba already exist. The intent of milking the popularity of Singham & Simmbas success to introduce another cop in the universe is so visible that it steals the spotlight from Sooryavanshi. All said and done, Sooryavanshi boils down to be a badly done spoof of multiple Rohit Shetty (and other similar templates) movies. This shatters the expectations I never had after the 4-minute trailer.
