Spider-Man: Far From Home isnt a great movie. It isnt meant to be. Put in the unenviable position of coming out right after Avengers: Endgame, which marked the big, bold finale of the first decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Far From Home is a welcome change of tone and pace. Its meant to be a fun adventure, a relatively low stakes affair. And it is.Spider-Man: Far From Home is relatively lighthearted and breezy even; a far cry from the intense stakes of most of the other films in the Avengers franchise. Its not a great film because its never meant to be. Its just a very good distraction enjoyable and funny.Im going with three and a half out of five. Dont miss the end credits. It changes everything.

Whats fun about Far From Home is that at its heart, its a teen comedy. So on the one hand, you have grave threats and on the other, Peter Parkers hormones. He is, as he puts it, just a €œ16-year-old kid from Queens.€ The kid defiantly ghosts Nick Fury, reluctantly chooses vanquishing villains over holding hands and makes big mistakes. Theres this lovely moment when he says with exasperation: I didnt think I would have to save the world this summer. Spider-Man: Far From Home is the shot of fun you need at this point in the long-running Avengers franchise. Its not essential viewing but its an amiable diversion. And do stick around for the end credits.

The films plot also has to juggle between a high-school romantic comedy tonality and the guns-blazing action spectacle that audiences have come to expect from an MCU film by now. While this can get occasionally tedious some jokes feel a little forced and could have easily been left out its engrossing under Jon Watts direction. Chalk it up to the performances, especially with Jake Gyllenhaals take on Quentin Beck a.k.a. Mysterio. The character is entirely unpredictable, made more intriguing by Gyllenhaals performance. The action set pieces are surprisingly innovative, especially in the second half of the film. As a result, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ is a lot of fun but more importantly, the film is also a satisfying continuation and way forward for the MCU, as Tom Holland proves hes more than capable of carrying an Avengers film on his young shoulders.

The biggest reason behind Marvels success is not that they are pumping in billions every year to make films it is that they continue to make films that are potentially more of the same but somehow end up surprising you. Spider-Man Far From Home is yet another one in their sprawling Avengers catalogue that delights and entertains, even if the setting and characters are now overly familiar. It is no match for Sam Raimis excellent Spiderman 2, but is a solidly enjoyable Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film that works both as an epilogue to Avengers: Endgame and a prologue to what comes next.

Rather than give audiences an Avengers-style mission, Spider-Man: Far from Home perfectly utilises its teenage playground to deliver several emotional punches. There are plenty of knee-slapping zingers and lots of unexpected twists. Its a classic Marvel enterprise, and yet director Jon Watts and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers make Far from Home stand out in the MCU. Far from Home could never and wasnt really intended to outperform or trump Avengers: Endgame. But its a definitely earned a place in the MCU while being a fantastic sequel for Homecoming.

Apart from the really stretched action sequence in the end, there isnt a lot to complain about in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It may seem boisterous at this point of time but the superhero creators might feel the need to lower down the average age of superhero characters after this one. Yes, its that youthful. After the hype that Avengers Endgame was, this one is a totally worthy successor. Hardly any reasons to not watch it.
