STOLEN MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:1.5/5 Review by Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBN Live)

ts a premise ripe for unintentional laughs, but Expendables 2 director Simon West and Cage himself seem to be taking the material too seriously to have much fun with it. Only Josh Lucas delivers a deliciously over-the-top performance as the manic one-legged villain with missing fingers. The action isnt bad, but it all feels monotonous and one-note. Setting the story against Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans lends some color to this mostly flat thriller, but not enough to merit a watch.Im going with one-and-a-half out of five for Stolen. Cage himself looks like he couldnt care less. Why should you?

Stolen is one of those films where, ten minutes in, you can pretty accurately predict how things will pan out. There aren’t many surprises here. This is a formulaic friendship-gone-sour, good-guy-versus-bad-guy story set in New Orleans, with a kidnap being the premise of the entire film and car chases thrown in. The film does move along at a brisk pace, but in the process, it doesn’t really get under the skin of each character. Give it a shot only if you’re a hardcore Cage fan.

Clearly Nicolas Cage doesn’t believe in taking a break. The actor returns with director Simon West’s thriller Stolen, which is a fast-paced edgy film with some good action and a lot of emotional drama.Cage’s movies are looking the same and that’s because he is doing the same thing over and over again. It’s time he did something totally different and if he decides to change something then he should start with his hair which looks weird in this film.Director Simon West does an average job this time. Though the story is predictable and full of clich©s, the action scenes are good and are well shot.Overall, Stolen is a decent watch.

Stolen alternates between being lacklustre and being pretty ridiculous. Should you watch it, who knows? Despite giving memorable performances films like Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation, the Oscar-winner’s tendency to be, putting it mildly, theatrical, and dubious choice of films has become a major form of entertainment in itself thanks to the internet.Stolen isn’t worth a lot of scrutiny. As an action movie it doesn’t not excite. Even when Cage’s presence alone is a throwback to the memorable action flicks of the 90s, which will continue to overshadow pedestrian stuff like this. Avoid.
