On a cold January morning in 2009, a US Airways flight lost power in both engines after being hit by a flock of birds just minutes after taking off from New Yorks LaGuardia airport. Unable to make it back to LaGuardia or other nearby landing strips, the pilot decided the best option at his disposal was to land the plane on the Hudson River. It was a grave risk, and Clint Eastwoods new film Sully vividly recreates each unnerving moment of that death-defying operation. For these strengths specifically, Sully is worth a watch. It never raises prickly questions in the way that American Sniper did, but its a well-made film and relatively crisp at a little over 90 minutes. Im going with three out of five.

Despite this film’s fairly brief runtime, Clint Eastwood manages to construct a gripping retelling of this incredible real life story, without losing pace for even a second. Sully comes across as a fascinating character. Interestingly, you might find shades of early Clint Eastwood in his mannerisms, behavior and decision-making. He flies solo, is quietly and calmly confident in his actions and is ethical and decent, placing humanity to the fore. He does what he believes in. Thus, it seems almost incredible that Sully would have to face an investigation regarding his call to land on water rather than head for an emergency airport landing.

In a film with an end as well known, the challenge always would have been to bring some newness. Eastwoods pacing does the trick, but even so, in bits, Sully is a stretch and sometimes rather obvious in its heavy-handed intentions to honour a hero. Even one as celebrated.

The final few minutes of Sully are exhilarating. Its what the film has been surging towards. Watching it unfold on that huge screen was incredible. The sounds, the images, the atmosphere envelopes you. And then, another curious thing happened. There was applause not hooting or whistling but real applause – genuine, respectful, appreciative and very uncommon.

Sully marks a return to an entertainment that doesnt come with needless frills or forced complexity. Eastwood certainly has a penchant for biographies J Edgar, American Sniper but Sully is indisputably his most accomplished film in this decade. The film, much like its protagonist, is hard to fault. Sullenberger has the patience to get the job done. The same can be said for Sully.
