Starts very well, but appeals in bits and spurts as it moves forward… Few comic portions work… Romantic track lacks fizz… Climax routine… #ManojBajpayee and #DiljitDosanjh wonderful.

On the whole, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is a well-written and well-made comedy which keeps the audiences entertained. It boasts of very good performances and deserves to score at the ticket windows. Since it is the first new release after almost eight months, and also because the public is still fearful about contracting the coronavirus, it is to be seen whether the audiences come to the cinemas in hordes. The word of mouth for the film will definitely be very good.

Its a set-up with potential but director Abhishek Sharma, who earlier made Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive and The Zoya Factor, botches it up. Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari saddles its solid cast with lame jokes, inane plot twists and dull storytelling. The good news is that Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari has released in select theaters. If you decide to go, please wear a mask and stay safe. Happy Diwali!

All said and done, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari is a witty satire on the gori-kaali hangover, what qualifies as good or bad behaviour in todays world and how little soothsayers know about marriages. Hop on and join in in the tug of war!

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is too focused on the clash of cultures and temperaments – Suraj is happy that he can read a comic book in two hours while the ambitious Tulsi Rane is an avid lover of Marathi theatre – to notice that it isn’t really saying anything of true import. That is a pity. Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari would have been a significantly weightier deal had its intent been translated into action in a more meaningful and measured manner.

All in all, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is a decent affair because of the performances. It’s a delight to watch Diljit and Manoj together on screen.

Is the film meant to be a social commentary on the tensions between north Indian interlopers and Bombay locals? The hostility was real, and still exists. But are we meant to laugh when it is alluded to in this clunky manner? So many good artists are laid to waste in the process: its not just the wonderful Bajpayee who so rarely gets to do a light-hearted caper that the film does injustice to, even the seasoned Kapoor and Pilgaonkar, and Manoj and Seema, are wasted.

Chhalaang, on the face of it, hits the right buttons, gender parity included, but it all seems more manufactured than organic when a man like Montu is handed a long rope and held up as a paragon of purposeful self-assertion.Chhalaang, unable to fend off its contradictions, gets all tangled up in its own mixed messages. As a result, the promised leap never materialises.

All said and done, the film does nothing but joins the list of this couldve been a great movie. Youd go in hearing about the cast presence but come out appreciating other bad films. Leaving you with one of the many cringey dialogues from the film, €œAapki twacha itni gori hai, aapki mail (dirt) se cream ban jaayegi!€

On the whole, SURAJ PE MANGAL BHARI is a decent entertainer and a clean family film that works because of its plot, the depiction of the mid-90s era and the performances.
