On the whole, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a well-made film but it is class-appealing and also too lengthy. Although it exploits the Hindutva sentiment full-throttle, it has its limitations because it is a historical (which the audience in large numbers will not be in favour of watching) and also because it has more class appeal than mass appeal. Hence it will flop at the box-office.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Swatantrya Veer Savarkar has been a controversial figure in Indias freedom struggle, given his unequivocal allegiance to armed revolution, notwithstanding the consequences. The revolutionary endured years of torture in the cellular jail. He paid a hefty price for his ideology by being dragged in the centre of a political storm ever since.

The films pacing varies throughout its runtime, with a slow theme and occasional random sequences of extremely fast-paced shots that it becomes difficult to get a hold of, after being treated slowly all this time. It appears that the films team has done a great job at focussing their research around Savarkar, and Savarkar alone.

There were moments while watching the film when I felt like going back home and watching ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ to quench my patriotic fervour. And that’s where the problem lies. Swatantrya Veer Savarkar turned out to be a shallow attempt. It can be only passed off as a very long, often one-sided history lesson on the ‘neglected’ freedom fighter

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar will be remembered for Randeep Hooda’s earnest efforts, not so much as a director trying to fit every aspect of the real-life persona’s unconventional life and choices, but definitely the actor in him. Barring the dragged-on script, among other glaring flaws, aside, there are these pure moments of absolute brilliance where Randeep Hooda’s acting genius comes to the forefront and the fan in you thinks to yourself, “Oh, boy, what an actor!” In the game of Cricket, they say not all good players make good captains. Take a cue, Randeep!

Swatantra Veer Savarkar is a very lengthy history class on activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The unengaging script despite its humorous dialogues, is sure to make the audience feel every single one of those 170+ minutes. Followers of Savarkar are sure to like the film, but others can definitely give it a miss. Pick up a book and read about him will be better. It seems like the film could be used for propaganda in the upcoming elections.

This is a regrettably unmoving life sketch of a cardinal player in Indias freedom struggle and post-independence relevance. Watch it if you must, but I would strongly recommend the authentic 2001 Hindi biopic Veer Savarkar instead to know what an ardently fiery individual Veer Savarkar was and how (actually) entertainingly action-packed was his life!

On the whole, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is Randeep Hoodas show, which shines because of its fearless approach and star performances.
