Terminator 2: Judgement Day 3D Review

Terminator 2: Judgement Day is, without a doubt, one of my all time favourite films. It’s a film that checks all the boxes when it comes to movie making. When I heard they were going to re-release this film in 3D 4K, I was sold. Heck, even if it wasn’t in 3D or 4K, I’d have gone to see it, just to be able to get that cinema experience I was not around to get when the film was originally released.

John and T800

I suspect many of you have already seen this James Cameron classic therefore I won’t go into too much detail about the story, but for those whose memory is a bit vague, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is set nearly 11 years after ‘The Terminator’. Sarah Connor has given birth to her son, John Connor, the soon-to-be leader of the future rebellion. The T800, aka The Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, is sent back in time by John himself to defend Sarah and John against the T1000, an upgrade to the T800. With the T800’s main mission being to protect John, Sarah and her son utilize this robot to help them prevent Judgement Day once and for all.

I think the main question people will be asking when it comes to this re-release is “is it worth it?” – the answer to that question is YES. Not only was I getting to see this masterpiece of a film in the theatre for the first time, but it had been remastered so well, it was as if I was seeing the film for the first time. At one point I had to go to the toilet but I left it as long as possible so that I wouldn’t miss anything decent, even though I knew exactly what would happen. The great thing about watching old films that have been remastered is that they were originally shot in analogue format therefore the superb quality is there, it just has to be brought to life, which is exactly what Cameron has done with this re-release. James Cameron even managed to wave his magical 3D wand on this film and make this one of the best 3D experiences I’ve ever had, confirming to us that he is the king of all 3 dimensions.

The one thing that stood out the most for me when watching this film was how it has lasted the test of time, from the stunts to the visual effects. Not one time did I think anything looked out of place or dated. The stunts in this film are some of the best I have ever seen, and shows us that nothing beats a real set piece over replacing everything with CGI. Computer graphics should only be used when it is physically impossible to recreate it in real life which is exactly how Cameron uses it in this film.

James Cameron is a true master when it comes to filmmaking, with T2 being an incredible example of that. I would have liked to have recommended everyone who is reading this to go see the movie but sadly this was only a one off showing, a showing I wasn’t going to miss for the world, and I feel massively rewarded for being a committed fan. “I’ll be back” is one of the most famous quotes in cinema history, and when it comes to Terminator 2: Judgement Day 3D, it certainly was back and like you will have never experienced it before.
