The 33 finds its inspiration in a local story at a Chilean mine mishap which went on to become a global phenomenon. The ordeal of these men trapped in a crumbling mine makes for a riveting tale that conjures up a host of emotions ranging from fear, anguish, pain to faith and hope. However, it is ironical that a film about mining fails to dig deep enough. Only a handful of the 33 are well fleshed out characters. The ‘ordeal’ is a broad term that the storyteller never dissects in detail. The director oversimplifies the story.

l. In fact throughout the ordeal it was theatrics and hallucinations that came through in heavily accented lingua. The sheer terror of maybe never coming out of the hell is never experienced here. And that’s this picture’s biggest failing. It did seem like since Riggen already knew the outcome, she lost track of what in reality could have occurred way below ground.

The 33 will touch your heart with the poignant and soul-stirring performances by the cast. The especially stimulating performance by Antonio Banderas is something to look forward to. The score of the film is well-composed by James Horner, and it perfectly underscored the emotion in almost every scene of the film. The spectacular performance delivered by the star cast of the film rekindles hope and humanity in the viewer. The representation of the historic incident will keep you at the edge of your seat with anticipation. The 33 is definitely a good experience
