Its hard to say what is more embarrassing in the film The Accidental Prime Minister its content or its craft. Based on a book by Sanjaya Baru, a newspaper journalist before he was appointed as media advisor to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the film, directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, is undisguised, shrewdly timed propaganda in an election year.Alas thats not enough to keep you engaged in this nearly-two-hour film whose agenda and very reason to exist is transparent from the word go. Im going with one-and-a-half out of five for The Accidental Prime Minister.

Lets begin by accepting that The Accidental Prime Minister is propaganda. Strategically, its a smart move. In election year, the film takes us into the corridors of power and doesnt shy away from taking names. The film gives us a noble, reluctant hero ex-prime minister Manmohan Singh who is then emasculated by his own party and his own leaders namely Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. But heres what I dont get why create such a shoddy product? The Accidental Prime Minister is narratively incoherent, technically sloppy and flat-out tedious. Debutant director Vijay Ratnakar Gutte assembles two fine actors Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna but he saddles them with a script, which is so disjointed that it feels like they randomly pulled out pages of the book and decided to shoot them.

The one-sided intent of The Accidental Prime Minister may have appeared more insidious had it felt like an actual motion picture. Instead, we have an apparently political film that borrows its background score occasionally from Kal Ho Na Ho. With all its hamhanded recreations and incessant news-channel roundups, this resembles an episode of Savdhaan India.

However, the impact of Manmohan Singhs actions on the junta is never really shown beyond a newsroom debate and a few newspaper headlines. At times, the film becomes convenient and lazy in execution, showing just close door scenes and intercutting with grainy file footage. The edit is a tad bit sketchy. But what the Accidental Prime Minister lacks in finesse, it makes up in being totally in-your-face. The film bravely names real characters and shows them in the light they are perceived in. We wish the writing had more depth with more focus on defining the individual characters.Bollywood has produced several political dramas that are intense, complex and dark, The Accidental Prime Minister has all of that in measured tones. It leaves you more entertained than informed, and we dont think its by accident.

For those of us who have actively followed the regime of Dr Manmohan Singh, one of the most honest Prime Ministers India, this movie serves up as a reminder of how “unhappy” this financial and economic whiz was in his chair as the leader of a nation with a 100-crore population. However, TAPM could be termed an important watch because it gives us a vantage-view of the dynasty politics, played by the new-age Gandhis and their sycophants for whom self often came before the nation.If you’re into current affairs this one will pique your interest. Be warned: this is not ‘entertaining’ by any stretch of the imagination.

The intent of the film is less confused than the direction, with the timing of the release (in election year), the selection of a book disavowed by the Singh family and Congress party, and a blatant disregard for a leader-in-waiting.I came away with Akshaye Khannas smug smile and his jaunty walk. He is conspiratorial throughout, occasional pensive and seemingly having the last laugh in an unaccomplished and inelegant adaptation.

Our only grouse would be that the movie might be a bit tedious for those with no political know-how of the goings on in the Congress party. But that should not stop you from watching the movie. In fact, every Indian should watch the movie, if only to find out how the game of politics is played within the four walls of a constitutional institution and as Baru cheekily comments at the beginning of the movie, ‘how the fate of a country of a billion people is decided by a handful of people’. Kudos to Gutte for making a mark with his directorial debut, and keeping it to a watchable one hour and 45 minutes and to Kher in particular for the tremendous physical transformation he has undergone to play the role of a lifetime. In the hands of a lesser actor, it would have looked absurd..
