THE CONJURING MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: Masand’s Verdict :CNN IBN (IBN Live)

It takes a film as old fashioned and as classically structured as The Conjuring to remind us that its the little things that can deliver the biggest scares. Its true weve seen creaking floorboards and dusty basements a thousand times before, but he knows just how to exploit them for maximum effect. Im not easily scared, but more than once during The Conjuring I found myself jumping in my seat.Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for The Conjuring. Its a nice throwback to the moody horror films of the 70s. Wear long sleeves when you go to the cinema, or you risk your date digging her nails into your arm.

Most horror films claim to be ‘based on real life incidents’. While they rarely live up to the hype around them, The Conjuring is an exception. The atmosphere build-up begins even before the film does, as a disclaimer is flashed before the opening credits, warning you that you might seek psychological help after watching the movie. The strategy works, as the film can scare the living daylights out of you. While we didn’t feel the need to undergo any counselling, unsettling it certainly was. Wan does not succumb to sensationalising the story either. It’s the subtle and steady build-up of suspense and psychological tension, coupled with sudden spine-chilling scares and dramatic silences that make you go numb with fear. Note: You may not like the film if you find psychological horror films disturbing.

The Conjuring is a throwback tribute to the classic The Amityville Horror style of film making. The Conjuring uses elements from both these films to create an original setting. There isn’t a single dull moment, you are on the edge of your seat rooting and praying the family triumphs over their satanic adversary. Make up and special effects are remarkable. Easily one of the scariest horror films to come out in the recent past, The Conjuring is smartly written, tightly edited and brilliantly executed. Be ready to get your daylights spooked out!

Spooky/Horror films in the last few years havent really been impressive. The Conjuring, however, is a different ball game. It will spook the daylights out of you. Well, atleast most of you. This is a movie that you want to go for with the intention of getting scared. The story is pretty much a usual run-of-the-mill horror flick. Like all horror movies, there are ghosts, demons and yes, exorcisms. But this movie will impress you in quite a spooky way. Unless of course you have watched too many horror films. The movie is fun to watch no doubt. It does not really slow down and neither will it get the audience bored. The movie does have quite a few scenes that will make you shudder and squeal (well, probably a little).
