When Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt took to the stage together at the SAG Awards earlier this year, rolling back the years to exchange zingers from their iconic 2006 high fashion dramedy The Devil Wears Prada, we were all left thinking the same thing — why hasn’t there been a sequel yet? And it’s clearly something Disney has been thinking about too. According to Deadline, a follow-up is in early development as the House of Mouse, with original film scribe Aline Brosh McKenna tapped to pen the sequel and OG director David Frankel in talks to return too.

Based on Lauren Weisberger’s same-named 2003 slave-and-tell book, The Devil Wears Prada followed aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Hathaway) as she took on a junior assistant role at fictitious New York fashion magazine Runway, working under much-feared editor Miranda Priestly (Streep) and alongside senior assistant Emily Charlton (a then-newcomer Blunt) as she learned the fashion industry ropes. An incisive careerist morality tale couched in chick flick (cerulean) clothing, the first film climaxed with Andy ditching Runway for a job at the New York Mirror, saving herself from becoming the next Miranda in the process. Plot details for the sequel remain unconfirmed as of yet, but Puck and Variety‘s reporting suggests we’ll see Miranda Priestly reckoning with the changing landscape of print journalism and the potential end of her career as she goes head-to-head with Emily Charlton, who’s become a high-powered executive since last we saw.

If Puck‘s reporting is accurate, we can expect to see at least Streep and Blunt back trading barbs in the new film, but with Disney currently declining to comment, whether all — or indeed any — of the original cast will return is very much up in the air at present. Even so, with a sequel finally in development, Elton John’s new musical take on the tale getting ready to put its glad rags on and hit the West End later this year, and at least the possibility of more Miranda Priestly putdowns to add to our repertoire, there’s plenty here for fans to be excited about. And if it takes a while for The Devil Wears Prada 2 to get here? Well then by all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills us!
