The Girl On The Train does not go very far because it is unsure of the methods that it needs to employ to make the female-led drama look and feel different from average thrillers people by foul-mouthed, trigger-happy cops and criminals. It opts for the easiest ways out and allows the more complex themes embedded in the plot – mental illness, toxic relationships and the perils of addiction – to remain unexplored.

The overstated writing lets down the plot, which in any case is filled with apparently unrelated characters popping in and out: a very take-charge type of police woman (Kriti Kulhari) is assigned to the case, a mysterious photographer creeps about the same woods where the body is found; a spot of blackmail is in the air; an over-friendly shrink (Roy Chowdhury) shows up briefly, as does a desi mobster. The characters come, and before we can clock them, they go. And Nusrat (Aditi Rao Hydari), the lovely-looking woman who sets everything into motion, could just as easily have been a wraith, so insubstantial is she.

To conclude, for those who have watched the 2016 film, there are surprises in the last 15 minutes. For the ones who havent watched the Hollywood film, the surprises might be slightly more, but the impact is questionable. Watch it for Parineetis impressive performance and the whodunit element.
With an extra half for Pari, we are going with 2.5 out of 5 stars for The Girl On The Train.

All said and done; this makes it to the rare list of movie remakes that werent a blunder. It does what a thriller should do, along with some notables add-ons. All three women (and a very talented Avinash Tiwary) individually add a lot to the already breath-clasping story. Highly recommended!

The Girl On The Train is an earnest effort at reconstructing what is perceived as a cult-classic-in-the-making and the hard work the entire cast & crew has put in is palpable. A lit more unabashed approach like losing the love ballads and that disc song coupled with sharper snipping tools could have made this rendition Bollywoods befitting answer to its Hollywood counterpart (helmed by Tate Taylor). We are afraid its almost there but not quite yet.

On the whole, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is an average fare. It impresses due to the fast-paced narrative and performances, especially of Parineeti Chopra. But the lack of character development and flawed climax proves detrimental.

Miscast as the self-destructive and pathetic Mira who must gather her wits to save herself, Parineeta Chopra exemplifies the movies lack of direction. Having jettisoned the main premise of Hawkinss intelligent and sensitive page-turner, the Hindi version comes up with a ludicrous replacement theory for Nusrats disappearance. It involves non-linear episodes, flat-voiced ruminations by Mira, and the crisscrossing of several redundant characters.
