I suspect this film is what Manisha Koirala used to call a home production. Thats a film that an actor does does to run his home. The Chinese talent doesnt fare better. Jing Tian who plays the commander of the Chinese troops gets the most screen time but her face is largely expression-free. Everyone looks grim and vaguely uninterested like they were mentally making plans for dinner. You can see the Yimou touch in the sweeping panoramic shots and bursts of color especially in the climax. But the rest of The Great Wall feels like a half hearted attempt to cater to the two biggest movie markets in the world. The film ends up serving neither. Im going with two stars.

Perhaps it was their decision to be obnoxiously bullish with their monsters, which robs them, and the film, of all suspense; or perhaps it is their overreliance on action over character, but The Great Wall could have been something special. You can really sense it. Its very irritating that it made the wrong choices when it mattered the most. But right now, as it stands, its a fairly run-of-the-mill fantasy epic with 3 spectacular action scenes that more than make up for one very muted Matt Damon.

On the other hand this is not the blockbuster youd expect from these two powerhouses of talent The Great Wall is in fact the worst movie of their respective careers neither having a heart to make you care nor having some path breaking VFX to simply enjoy over popcorn. The truly frustrating aspect of the film is how it feels like a propaganda piece.

What adds to its predicament is its predictable plot, reminiscent of formulaic Hollywood blockbusters. The splendid use of vivid colours, imagery and Chinese background score initially get your hopes high but The Great Wall soon turns into a monster-slashing, CGI heavy, dated Hollywood potboiler with no soul. If you seek nothing more than popcorn entertainment and some visual thrill, this movie may do it for you but otherwise, it fails to amaze. The Great Wall doesnt have a single dull moment, thanks to the visuals in 3D. But if you seek something deeper, beyond the spectacle of fantasy war movie tropes, this ones quite forgettable.
