Director Francis Lawrence (replacing The Hunger Games’ Gary Ross) is armed with a much tighter screenplay than the 2012 film, and sets up the sequel on a larger scale with greater challenges. In one genuinely tense scene, the tributes are forced to fight an army of snarling primates. ‘Catching Fire’ has more than a few gripping set-pieces, but its strength is its solid cast and the lasting impression they make. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’. This sequel ends on a promising note, leaving you hungry for the next instalment.

Director Francis Lawrence takes almost two and a half hours to tell this story, which had me alternating between being hooked and being bored. Though I did enjoy the imaginative costumes and the abrupt end left me intrigued about film number three. I just hope thats shorter. Im going with two and a half stars.

If you like ‘grim dystopian sci-fi films’, Catching Fire is a spectacular ‘edge-of-the-seat’ thriller, which is unnerving, emotionally intense and immensely engaging. The film is strangely unsettling and uplifting at the same time. Spine-chilling cinematography evokes that much required eerie feeling throughout. Dramatic costumes are another highlight. The film makes our hopelessness pit against our own indomitable spirit of survival. Who wins? Note: You may not like this film, if you don’t like sci- fi action movies.

Every frame is slick, though not as dark as that of the first film despite the characters dealing with extreme trauma in this one. Simon Beaufoy and Michael Ardnt adapt the novel to the big screen quite well but the film seems to drag a bit. Elaborate sets and realistic effects sometimes overshadow the actors themselves; and even though the actors do a fine job, it is not always enough for a film of this kind of intensity. Hunger Games: Catching Fire is clinical at times but nevertheless a smooth ride.

Catching Fire holds your attention despite its two and a half hour runtime. One big reason why it works and stands apart from the rest of the big franchises of the year is that it spends almost an hour on character development, and tries decently hard to avoid the cliches. The other contestants have some personality this time. Its great that the film works as pure sci fi, and as a teen centric escapist entertainment, and as a blokbuster and as fodder for the Jlaw GIF lovers.

The first film though also well done, was a little rough around the edges, still introducing all the elements of the series. The second instalment, however, smoothens out all the edges and manages to effortlessly capture the beauty and character of the first film while also engaging the audience and taking the story further. All in all, the movie works because all the elements blend together well. In a fantasy film, the best thing that can happen is not to lose track of the plot in the midst of overwhelming action sequences and over the top effects. And The Hunger Games – Catching Fire, does just that, it stays true to the story. Those who’ve read the books will not be disappointed, and those who haven’t will be pleasantly entertained just the same.

Catching Fire is a rare gem that defies the norms of a blockbuster and yet manages to entertain as thoroughly as any superhero movie. Except Katniss is not a superhero shes just you, or me; a woman trying to survive and save those she loves from a world thats hell bent on bringing them to their knees. So while I cross out dates on a calendar till the arrival of Mockingjay 1, go watch Catching Fire, before its put out by something as inane as R€¦ Rajkumar.
