Depending on which way you look at it, The Impossible, starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, is either a voyeuristic spectacle of human suffering, or a gut-wrenching but ultimately moving tale of courage and survival. Despite heartfelt, understated performances from both McGregor and Watts, and a terrific turn by Holland as a kid thrust with responsibility far greater than his years, The Impossible occasionally feels heavy handed and melodramatic. The Impossible then is seldom subtle, but vastly improved by three stupendous central performances. Its a far from perfect film, but one that touches you and moves you despite its shortcomings. Im going with three out of five for The Impossible. Watch it for the remarkable acting, and for the horrifying disaster scene filmed so realistically.

An idyllic tropical paradise morphs into a tropical hell from which there seems no exit. The movie gets a bit heavy-handed at times but it can be reasoned that this is Bayona’s attempt at telling the story as realistically and graphically as possible by placing the viewer in the centre of it all. By being too focused on the family, there are moments when you might wonder about the thousands of other islanders whose own plight is not touched upon here. In their quest to sift out order from the chaos, they all manage to portray a range of feelings – fear, loss, love and the will to carry on – quite convincingly, without sounding fake or soppy. All in all, it’s a powerful ode to the human will to live. You will not like this film if you don’t like graphically-portrayed disaster survival stories.

A spectacularly filmed tale of the ordeal suffered by a family caught up in the tsunami which hit the south-east coast of Asia in 2004, The Impossible is enthralling. The tragedy is conveyed while focusing on one familys struggle. A British couple and their three sons (the fictionalised alter-egos of a real-life Spanish clan) are on vacation in Thailand when the tsunami strikes. Combining suspense and intense characterizations, Bayona has fashioned a disaster drama that lingers.

If Naomi Watts beautiful looks and even more beautiful English accent has pleased you in the past, you must go and watch the film. Apart from that, you may want to give it a miss since most of us wish to unwind with happy films after the end of a long, stressful week. There is a happy ending here too, with a tad-bit of a difference. What took my breath away was the bond and the affection that the three brothers share. One of the few films that shall teach you to be positive in a given situation as well as believe the concept of Carpe Diem. Verdict: A neat attempt at portraying a true story of an estranged family. An average watch.
