THE LONE RANGER MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)

It’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ set in the ‘Wild Wild West’, with Depp repeating much of the same shtick that made his Jack Sparrow such an engaging character. He’s cast as Tonto, the Native American companion to the film’s titular hero, and he sports a dead crow on his head and face paint all over his mug. It’s a performance begging for laughs, and while some of it is indeed funny, it’s never original enough to find a spot in Depp’s canon of memorable quirky characters. I’m going with two out of five for ‘The Lone Ranger’. There’s a thrilling sequence in the final act involving a daring rescue from a speeding train. But like the rest of the film it goes on and on and on.

You’ve seen Johnny Depp playing a sozzled, swaying pirate with the luck of the devil by his side. Now, here’s Depp, sans the sauce and in Native American garb as Tonto, with the devil-may-care attitude still in place. An ‘origin tale’, the visuals show great attention to detail and Depp’s Tonto is, without a doubt, the best thing about this movie. In fact, it is Reid who is Tonto’s sidekick here. Note: You may not like this film if you don’t like movies set in the Wild West.

Although the film has a promising start, it becomes a tad tiring after the first 30 minutes and the adrenaline only soars right at the end, in the final, and if I may say so, brilliantly choreographed action sequence. The level of gore in one certain scene where Butch Cavendish eats a raw, beating human heart does make one wonder why the film was awarded a U/A certificate. All in all, The Lone Ranger does provide more than a handful laughs but takes too long to get to the point, making you wish you’d left it alone.

Very much on the epic and mythical tales of big Hollywood movies, set in the period (1930s) this one is interesting watch. Although the movie deals with the notion of justice and law, it never looses its focus in being a fun adventure movie at the same time.Well directed and having some superb action sequences which will surely amuse the audience who want to a movie of fun filled cinema ride.On the negative note the film is too grand on scale and fails in avoiding of becoming too overburdened with the ideas which appear meaningless at times. The result is that the film feels overblown at times trying hard to entertain audience but also is successful in this attempt for the most part. Hence if one is in mood to watch an entertainer, for now it is The lone ranger.
