THE LONG GAME follows a group of Mexican American teenagers in 1955 Texas who love the game of golf but get help from a local school official when they’re restricted from playing at a country club. THE LONG GAME has a strong morally uplifting story and worldview that’s entertaining and fun to watch, but it has some foul language that warrants caution for children.
JB Peña absolutely loves playing golf and is very good at it too. He’s headed to one of the best country clubs in the area to ask to join. As he drives, a group of young men playing golf in the field accidentally break his car window and hit him in the head, making him late to the meeting. He shows up to the meeting with blood on his head, passionately asking if he can join. However, the head of the country club tells him he can’t join because he’s Mexican. Distraught, JB goes home to his wife, Lucy, who encourages him.
JB starts his job as superintendent of the local school district. As he’s being introduced to the high school, he sees the boys that hit him with the golf ball. The boys try to run away, but eventually get taken into JB’s office, where he and Principal Guerra talk to them. Principal Guerra wants to discipline them, but JB has a different idea. JB decides to tell the boys they can either mow his lawn every Saturday morning to repay for his window or join his golf team. This is after JB finds out the teams play tournaments at the golf club. All the boys agree, except Joe, who’s probably the best golf player. That’s because Joe knows his father will be upset if he joins the golf team, because his father wants him working and helping provide for the family.
JB recruits his friend from the war, Frank, played by Dennis Quaid, who’s an excellent golfer and coach. Frank is a bit rough around the edges but sees the potential in the boys. They start to build their own field out of a farming field, to practice. After talking to the groundskeeper at the golf course, Joe realizes he needs to take a chance and play on the golf team.
Will the team be about to get tournaments even though they’re Mexican? Will Joe give up his attitude and play as a teammate?
THE LONG GAME is a very entertaining, fun movie. It has jeopardy, drama and laughs. Also, the actors in the movie, which stars Jay Hernandez from the MAGNUM P.I. reboot, Dennis Quaid, winner of MOVIEGUIDE®’s 2023 Grace Prize for Most Inspiring Movie Performance, and Cheech Marin of NASH BRIDGES, do a great job.
THE LONG GAME has a strong moral worldview with wonderful messages. One of the main characters leads the young men to become better men, teaching them to treat others with respect, no matter how they are treated themselves. JB teaches the boys to present themselves well and to follow the rules. THE LONG GAME also has a nice pro-life message, as well as a mention about praying for someone. Finally, the movie promotes the American Dream and other positive qualities about America and its culture.
