PLACE BEYOND THE PINES MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:3/5  Review By:  Rajeev Masand  Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)

His latest film, The Place Beyond The Pines, is a more sprawling tale that follows two fathers and two sons over many years. Although it explores some ambitious themes, the film is way too long, a tad confused, and never as genuinely affecting as the earlier one. Unfortunately the film relies too heavily on coincidence to drive its plot, and Luke and Averys grown-up sons simply arent compelling as them, rendering the finale a crushing disappointment. Still, Im going with three out of five for The Place Beyond The Pines. Watch it for Goslings riveting performance, and for the ambition of its intentions.

A daredevil motorcycle rider resorts to robbing banks to support his newborn son and lover. It is a decision that proves to have major consequences. An ambitious film, Cianfrance aims for higher ground, and gets there with ease. Ryan Gosling’s act gives method acting a new meaning – it is elegance in itself. And incidentally, the English translation of the Mohawk word Schenectady (the town where the movie unfolds), is ‘the place beyond the pines’. Note: You will not like this film if you don’t like dramatic movies about inter-connected lives.

This is a film about fathers, sons and the evil that men do. It ambitiously spans decades and generations. Its long, dense and tangled. But it is beautifully enacted and directed. It has a sweep and sadness that stayed with me. If youre watching one film this week, make it The Place Beyond the Pines.

This is particularly a poignant tale, a mood-piece where the film deals with the importance of family and the notion of sin; told through various relationships and misfortune, this movie successfully elevates the very scope of the moral drama. With all the brilliant aspects of the movie described above, The Place Beyond the Pines comes with its imperfections. The major flaw is its ambition and the transition from the second act to the third act. There is an inherent gap when the story shifts to the next timeline and this is the area where clearly the film suffers. Verdict: An intense tale of morality and redemption, this is epiphanic revelation of human lives in parts.
