THE RAID 2 ENGLISH MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

If action films are intended strictly to deliver thrilling scenes of pulse-racing violence, then ‘The Raid 2’ delivers just that – with relish and energy. Dubbed into English from its original Indonesian version, it’s a little disconcerting at first to hear Asian characters speak with American accents, but an hour into the film, it’s not the dialogue you’re paying attention to. I’m going with three out of five for ‘The Raid 2’. If you have the stomach for it, this is pretty good fun.

In how many ways can you kill a man? What happens to a face when a sickle-shaped blade slices through a cheek? What damage can a baseball bat do to a mouth? And how much flesh can hammers dislodge when they are applied with force? If you have ever pondered questions like these, then The Raid 2 is the film for you. Director Gareth Evans following up his cult 2012 film The Raid: Redemption, goes bloodier, more brutal, more bloated and sadly, infinitely more boring.

With baseball bats breaking bones aplenty, there are no double meanings or any subtle asides to dilute the action; this is pure violence. The only difference is, there is quite a maze that our protagonist has to wind his way through. Sub-plots and side-characters pop by (some are dispatched as quickly) now and then. But then again, this is a movie that is not seen for a plot, but for the action sequences. Conversely, it’s the duration of this film that makes it seem overly long at times. If you enjoy savage, on-screen action that is unabashedly over-the-top and even sometimes borders on pastiche with all the gangster film tropes, don’t hesitate to go watch this.

The Raid 2 features a more substantial storyline and dialogues than its predecessor — which is really saying something — it still fails to lend a logical explanation for the existence of almost continuous violence. Watching the film is like being stuck in a never-ending video game where the only way to win is to slaughter. There are films built around the theme of violence and then there is violence for the sake of making a film — The Raid 2 happens to fall into the latter category.

Hello sir. Welcome to The Raid 2, your one stop destination for ass kickery, mayhem and guilty pleasures. Me: Hello. Whats on the menu? Evans: Have you visited our previous restaurant The Raid Redemption? Me: Oh yes, I loved it. Is this one better? Evans: You bet your ass sir. The previous one was a tasty quick snack, this is a more expansive seven course menu. But youll have to wait a bit for the dishes to be prepared. I assure you its worth the wait.
