THE SMURFS 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: Masand’s Verdict :CNN IBN (IBN Live)

Like the earlier film in 2011, The Smurfs 2 is a harmless but far-from-delightful kiddies picture that appears to have a cash register where its heart ought to be. Its formulaic and cutesy but never treads new ground, sticking closely to the template of the previous film that grossed $564 million dollars. The plot, once again, involves the little blue fellas venturing out into the €œreal world€ to save their species from their lifelong nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel. Im going with two-a-half out of five for The Smurfs 2. Best suited for the little ones; parents must just endure it for their sake.

The pace, along with the live action, keeps moving and the script has several witty asides. In an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, there are a few sub-plots too, among them a moralistic take on who really created Smurfette. The rest of the Smurfs also get their 15 minutes of fame and gags. Apart from that, the film’s score (Heitor Pereira) adds a non-verbal emotiveness to some of the scenes. Also livening things up a bit is the comic timing in the movie. All said and done however, while there is nothing disagreeable about this movie, there’s nothing very remarkable about it either.

For all its engineered sentimentality, exhausted Smurf lingo and two noble messages — not all step parents are an extension of Cinderellas and what matters is who you choose to be, reminiscent of another lousy movie (Spider-Man 3), The Smurfs 2 is an excruciatingly basic, bland and boring representation of a famously merry and meticulous community. Still, I wont be surprised if my little neighbour and children in the age group of 2 to 8 lap up this cleverly marketed mediocrity once again. As for the parents accompanying them, look forward to that 105-minutes smurfin long power nap.
