The run-time doesnt work in its favour at this point, especially as some sub-plots become tedious, drawing your attention away from the main story. While its grittier than your average chick flick, the biggest drawback in ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’ is that it doesnt commit to one genre. Theres not enough action or intrigue that comes with a spy flick which becomes problematic when the humour fails to land. Still, theres a lot of fun to be had with some surprises and enough laughs to keep you reasonably entertained.

The clunky script zeroes in on a pair of 30-something best friends who unwittingly get embroiled in an international espionage operation. Entrusted with a top-secret device that needs to be delivered to a contact at a caf© in Vienna, the novice spies-by-accident must also contend with a team of deadly assassins on their trailThe buddy flick is intermittently enlivened by the kooky antics of Kunis and McKinnon. The latter, in particular, is a hoot. Overall, though, The Spy Who Dumped Me is a downer.

Although it seems to be a mishmash of genres, director Susanna Fogel’s, The Spy Who Dumped Me, is a buddy film at its core. Narrated in a non-linear manner, the editing and screenplay are issues that blur the timelines making the narrative confusing at times.Mounted with excellent production values, the film has its moments of brilliance and cliches, which does offer a midlist, escapist journey, over all.
