Finally, the soundtrack of the film adds to the fun factor by transporting you back to the time of the video game. ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is neither groundbreaking nor a complex story, but it certainly works as a fun, nostalgic trip that will enthral kids while bringing back childhood memories for adults.

The makers do a good job on the visual scale of the movie. They remain committed to providing a replica of the kingdoms shown in the game. So, no complaints there. But the movie doesnt rise about it. The writing is plain boring. There is no attempt made to rise above the trademark catchphrases like its a-me and a lets-a-go. Even that seems borderline offensive, after a point. There is absolutely no redemption for a bad adaptation, and Chris Pratts Brooklyn-version of Marios voice is not the only problem with the film. The jokes dont land, the plot boring, devoid of any Yu-hoo moments.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a fireball of animated fantasy. Mario, Luigi, and Peachs adventure delights with its infectious energy and smart implementations of video game callbacks, and the top-shelf animation renders the Mushroom Kingdom as an Oz-like wonderland that begs to be explored in the inevitable sequels that will follow. The assembled voice cast puts a unique spin on each of their characters, but undercooked emotional arcs dont get the same attention as the aesthetics, something not helped by a paint-by-numbers plot that bafflingly keeps Mario and Luigi away from each other for half the movie. Illumination and Nintendo set out to deliver a Mario movie that anyone could enjoy, and that anyone with even a passing knowledge of the games could get lost in – theyve undeniably succeeded on both fronts.

Bottomline: The Super Mario Bros Movie is a visually stunning film but with a weak climax. Avid fans of the video game are in for a nostalgic ride but be prepared to be surrounded by a lot of children. PS. Even if you have not played the game, youd still be able to understand and enjoy the film.

A harmless, generic blur of kids €œcontent€ (I hate that word, but it feels painfully apt here), The Super Mario Bros movie isnt one to enjoy with your kids, as much as it is one youre forced to sit through because of them. Do children not deserve better than a 90-minute blur of cotton candy action? I guess the bajillion dollars this movie will no doubt do at the box office suggests otherwise.

Matthew Fogel fails to carry forward the intelligent humour and instead does a fan service, and thats the problem; you may ask why? Because the fans of this game are either kids or humans who have lost their childhood. This doesnt justify Shigeru Miyamotos (Marios creator) age-old vision of visualising the Mushroom Kingdom. That deserves Pixar-like sensibilities. Though the movie stays true to the game by using many nerdy references (like the question mark boxes, the bullet bill, and power-ups), it isnt backed by an equally intriguing narrative for the characters.
