These are stand-out acts. Chopra does her bit, too, though her American-desi rebellious bahu is a bit fuzzily dealt with. But the film belongs to Gourav, who channels that very specific, razor-sharp mixture of obsequiousness and rage, to come up with a stellar performance. Never deride those who serve you, and never, ever turn your back on them, or the white tiger with the brown skin, will swallow you whole.

Can one man’s miraculous rags-to-riches story encapsulate the cumulative “truth of India”? Balram Halwai, the protagonist of The White Tiger, would have us – and a Chinese Premier, no less – believe that it can. The truth is that his account, vivid as it is, merely skims the surface of a complex, ever-morphing social collage.

In a film of this stature, where the writing is taut and the dialogues memorable, rendering a witty
conclusion is a humongous task. But we try. The closing shot shows a boastful Balram breaking the
fourth wall and with those piercing, rage-filled eyes, tells us, €œIve switched sides. I have broken
away from the coop.€ The smirk and that air of arrogance are self-explanatory no, Balram is not a
good man anymore, just rich!

On the whole, The White Tiger is mostly a faithful adaptation of Arvind Adiga’s novel, and by that yardstick, it neither transcends the drawbacks of its source material nor does it supersede its limitation, but it does manage to present am interesting look of what even the most loyal are capable of in today’s India if they’re pushed to the brink of antiquated bondage. I’m going with 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Serious Men€”another adaption from a famous novel, but in Hindi and with an Indian director€”is a useful comparison. Sudhir Mishra’s film is similarly caustic but a good deal more fluent and relatable than Bahrani’s, and its understanding of caste politics and social mobility has more nuance (its also much funnier). Neither does The White Tiger have the manic energy of Slumdog Millionaire, though it does make a sly reference to it (€œThere isnt a million-rupee gameshow you can win€). Balrams ascent to power isnt unbelievable but it is abrupt, achieved in a manic 10 minutes. He describes himself as going from €œsocial entrepreneur to business entrepreneur€, adding wryly, €œIt was not easy.€ Instead of dwelling on his degradations at the hands of his employers, a little more of this journey would have been welcome.

Fuelled by a punchy hip-hop soundtrack and a frenetic energy, The White Tiger is a creepy chronicle of a newly globalised nation struggling, like Balram, with an inbuilt inferiority complex. We keep telling ourselves that we’re tigers, but really, we’re just tigers thatre chasing their own tails.

Whatever its failings may have been, Adiga’s The White Tiger was worth reading for its disgust towards Indian social divides, its refusal to mince words and that question, “Do we loathe our masters behind the facade of love – or do we love them behind a facade of loathing?”The Great Indian Rooster Coop and Balram Halwai deserve better than this occasionally satisfying but largely pallid, superficial Hollywood adaptation.
