THE WORLD BEFORE HER HINDI MOVIE REVIEWS

Ratings:– Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

There are millions of Indias within our country and Nisha Pahuja’s documentary ‘The World Before Her’ captivates us with this detail. Training her camera on a beauty factory, where contestants go in to be polished so one can become the next Miss India, and then on a Durga Vahini camp where girls are coached by Hindu extremists, Pahuja shows us a disturbing portrait of the modern Indian woman. ‘The World Before Her’ is a powerful documentary and I strongly recommend that you see it – this is the kind of cinema that will leave you shaken and stirred.

With absolute clarity but with a non-judgmental eye, Pahuja presents Indias cultural wars and explores what it means to be an Indian woman. This film is frightening but it is also deeply moving and significant. I urge you to time for it.

What makes Nisha Pahuja’s multi-award winning documentary stand out is that it has the courage to ask what nobody else does: who is the Modern Indian Woman? The World Before Her is a poignant, disturbing watch. It makes you wonder which will be the new India — Ruhi’s glamorous €œmodern€ world, or Prachi’s traditional, religious State. And will either of these really be so different from each other?

The tight focus on these two worlds leaves out the other Indias that may not be confined to the single-minded rigour of either camp, beauty or Durga Vahini. There are not just two Indias, as a doyenne in the beauty business and at one time such a popular TV face, declares. There are many more. What choices do the girls who live in those other Indias have? Do they have any at all?

The docu-drama tackles a variety of untapped topics in just 90 minutes. In fact, it manages to do this without there ever being a dull moment. The World Before Her follows two fascinating women, who attempt to bring about a change in their own way. It is recommended for anyone looking for an entertaining film that also gets the viewers thinking.
