THOR 2: THE DARK WORLD MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:Masand’s Verdict ( CNN IBN)

Everything moves at a frenetic pace in this film, giving you barely any chance to enjoy the action, to soak in a clever one-liner, or to mourn the death of a loved character. Unfortunately thats as formulaic and predictable as the recipe for an omelette, and theres never any real sense of fear or dread when Thor faces off against the supposedly indestructible villains. As superhero movies go, this is underwhelming stuff.Im going with two out of five for Thor: The Dark World. Only enjoyable in spurts.

The effects are amazing but the best moments are when Thor and Loki share screen space. Loki has the power to make you empathize with him, but is that just another one of his deceptive tricks? Thor, Loki and whole Norse mythos is as complex as any school of mythology that was formed eons ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. This movie is also about sibling rivalry as well as a long-distance love story with an intergalactic twist. Don’t miss this one. Note: You may not like this film if you don’t enjoy superhero films.

Thank all nine heavens, then, for Thor, that most old-school of heroes, for staying true to the technicolour spirit and giving us a movie that refuses to take itself too seriously. So raise a mug of mead to the glorious Thor. It puts the lark in malarkey, and it’s as good for a laugh as any big screen excursion has been, this year. Oh, and sit through all the credits for two scenes you wouldn’t want to miss. Schadenfreude and Thor might not go together, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another hero so totally, awesomely Super.

The special effects are remarkable and attention to detail has been paid for the casts ensemble, make up and set decoration. Also for fanboys of the literature there is a little bit of history and back story that will appeal to those wanting to dig deeper. Predictability is the films biggest enemy. Even before we hit the middle, there is a sense of where the story is going and how the end will be. Those expecting big twists and turns will be in for a disappointment.Thor rises to the occasion, he flies, but doesn’t quite soar! Fans won’t be disappointed though.

Director Alan Taylor does a fine job retaining the balance of action, CGI effects and humour that Kenneth Branagh fashioned for 2011’s Thor. A whiff of the unpredictable, though, is missing this time. The CGI-heavy current adventure was obviously far tougher to shoot than write given the formulaic story it delivers. The focus here is not so much about narrating an original adventure as it is about how engagingly the film narrates a predictable storyline. The climax as well as its build-up make for all-out fun. Bring on Thor 3, but serve it with a few surprise spins.

Thor: The Dark World has its ups and downs. But its redeeming quality is the fun which Loki brings to the screen. As far as bad guys go, the Dark Elves do alright. Chris Hemsworth does his hammer duties well. Natalie Portman was a little off. The visuals were stunning and the effects were good. All the action sequences were fun to watch. All in all, a good comic-book film. Definitely worth catching.

Thor: The Dark World isnt so much a sequel as the latest plug-and-play into the comic book companys blockbuster algorithm. Its a reliably bankable formula of world-saving action sequences, new villain introductions and clever quips from women on the side. Ardent fans (who should stay through the credits) will likely be satiated by the pleasing enough Thor: The Dark World. But perhaps at this point, even diehards may wish for something more from a Marvel equation that often subtracts humanity.
