The scummy underbelly of tinseltown is where Tiku Weds Sheru resides, with its parade of leering producers, starstruck girls being forced into compromising, and junior artists being shoved around on sets. Nothing new in any of this, but what you would expect from such a film which comes from a Kangana Ranaut production is something sharper and edgier, given her own singular trajectory as an outsider who made it big in Bollywood.

The films narrative and Sai Kabirs direction suffer from a lack of cohesion and flow. Its the love story of two strugglers in part and about what junior artistes face in the name of getting the big break. Often, the screenplay does not do justice to either theme. The film has a sluggish start and doesnt have much new to offer until the end. Whats more, you feel no empathy for the characters. The movie is watchable for Nawazuddins performance, though his dressing up as a woman in a dance number could have been skipped.

As an OTT entertainer, Sai Kabirs attempt in offering a satirical take on the film industry has its moments, but they are far and few. The film has a unique setting and an interesting idea on paper. But its the flawed execution that prevents it from ever taking off.

Sai Kabir takes the narrative through a lot of dark alleys that feel sudden and abrupt. The intent here might have been to expose the underbelly of the world of films and how shady it can be (in Sherus own words) but throwing in drugs, sex, scandals, scams, an unnecessary cameo nearly threatens to make this a bland potpourri. What keeps Tiku Weds Sheru afloat are Tiku and Sheru.

Indeed, there is too much of black in the script, with movie producers and others being painted as heartless villains. I could not see one good guy there which makes the love story of Tiku and Sheru very unevenly balanced. But the work is peppered with some nice couplets that Sheru recites to woo Tiku, and these turn into some charming moments.

An unusual lead pair – Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur – and an off-kilter plot hinging on an odd couple lend an element of freshness to Tiku Weds Sheru, a well-intentioned but sputtering black comedy that alternates unevenly between the comic and the grave. With its novelty wearing off quickly and the broad-strokes characters sinking into a rut of the script’s making, the film struggles with both momentum and tonal consistency. In its first 30 minutes or so, Tiku Weds Sheru rattles along pretty nicely. By the halfway mark it slackens sharply. It ends up huffing and puffing its way to a none-too-startling climax.

Tiku Weds Sheru totally fails to bring the satire it intended to highlight with its quirky characters. The roles are not well-defined, while vulnerable scenes too don’t have much impact or punch. However, it can be a decent watch if you leave logic behind. The story’s pace is uneven, some sequences are dragged out, whereas others are rushed. The climax could have been better. Makers genuine attempt to showcase the struggles and tribulations of newcomers in Bollywood and a city like Mumbai somehow off-hand.

There is no redeeming feature in Tiku Weds Sheru, and that is also rare. Even the worst movies have a song, a scene, or a performance that makes all the effort of making a film worthwhile. This one should have been scrapped at script stage, if there was such thing on the table.
