Kajol as a feisty and foul mouthed dancer-actor-single mother Anuradha Apte €” isnt driven by her responsibilities or regrets. She is unapologetic about saying what she feels and doing what she does. Part autobiographical and part fiction, the film meanders indefinitely before getting its point across. At heart, it deals with a dilemma that continues to plague women. Whats better? Having the freedom to make your choices even if they turn out to be wrong or being defined by societys expectations of you.

For women, no matter how independent they are, surmounting patriarchal stumbling blocks is a huge challenge. It always was. It still is. In Tribhanga: Tedhi Medhi Crazy, film and television actress Renuka Shahane’s Hindi directorial debut, three headstrong women of one dysfunctional family deal with the immediate and long-term repercussions of their choices. They do so without resorting to shrill showboating.Tribhanga, a genteel, appropriately unfussy ode to women who are unapologetic about what they want, merits three cheers – and more.

Actor turned writer/director Renuka Shahane’s comfort in sentiment shows but her confused stance on emancipation of women is a big let-down.The leading ladies in Tribhanga are punished for defying norms by way of abusive or apathetic partners.There are many ham-fisted scenes to assert the social bullying that happens inside classrooms when unconventional women decide a life independent of marriage. On one hand, we are expected to view these women in their free-spirited, non-conformist glory. On the other, they are consciously enabling it.Clearly, smoking cigarettes and dropping F-bombs is the extent of her feminism.

A life-changing event draws together three generations of women to look back and introspect: were they right in their actions, and the things they thought about each other? Renuka Shahanes directorial debut Tribhanga is a chamber piece which manages to go past its problems to brim over with real feeling.

This is a necessary debate, but what is beyond debate is that Tribhanga is an entertaining, thoughtful, well-acted female bonding flick, as unconventional as the three women whose stories it tells. I would pay Netflixs entire annual subscription fee just for the joy of watching a film gutsy enough to have a female character describe marriage as €œsocietal terrorism€, for Tanvi Azmis dignified screen presence or for the manner in which Shahane presents that final, poignant shot of the three women with Sanjoy Chowdhurys sublime score playing in the background. Lovely.

Estranged relationships, humanising women and retrospection are some heavy terms that went around when Netflix announced its latest release — Tribhanga: Tedhi Medhi Crazy. Given the cast of Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and Mithila Palkar, films director Renuka Shahane was anticipated to pull off the tricky task of making an impactful and layered film, however, it didnt turn out as planned.

Like Milan, Shahane too plays the role of peacemaker and bridge-builder, forcing three divergent positions to point in the same direction. There is much in Tribhanga that lingers, but also a great deal that doesnt quite come together.

Tribhanga may have turned out better in a different world but a lot of things would have to be changed to make a positive, strong difference. However, as Nayan says in the film about her parenting choices, she does wish to go back and do things differently. But she cannot. All she can do is apologise. We will take the apology, too.
