A film like Tubelight which espouses the power of faith and belief through the uncorrupted eyes of a man-child needed a lightness of touch that is conspicuous by its absence here. Tubelight is well intentioned but overtly manipulative and doesn’t so much tug at your heartstrings as it punches you in the face demanding that you care. It’s also over-long at nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes, and excruciatingly slow and boring in parts. It’s a crushing disappointment on all counts. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five.

On the whole, Tubelight is a very disappointing fare and lacks entertainment value. Considering the star-cast, the technical team and the canvas, it is a letdown and a poor show. Although the producers have made a humongous profit by selling its India theatrical, Overseas, satellite, digital and music rights, its distributors will incur heavy losses. Of course, the release in the Eid week will help the film but the negative word of mouth will ultimately tell on its business.

Basically, Tubelight is cinema as a sermon. Which makes the film flat and emotionally unconvincing. The good intentions and lectures on yakeen dont translate into a gripping narrative. However, I did enjoy seeing the late Om Puri on screen again. Pritams Radio Song is still playing in my head. And the scenery made me want to immediately escape to the hills. But this could have been so much more.

The erstwhile documentary filmmaker craftily remarks at our tendency to uphold superstition over science as well as the ridiculous expectation from a section of citizens to constantly validate their nationalism as the ongoing debate of growing intolerance rages on till today. Scenes where Salman and Tangu compete over a high decibel of Bharat Mata Ki Jai reveal deep-rooted prejudices.Alas, not enough to be dazzled by the boring, bogus naivet© of Tubelight.

Salman trying to move mountains and stop wars by sticking his arms out and grunting earnestly, over and over. These are supposed to be emotionally hardcore scenes depicting naive wholesomeness and a good heart. They come across unbearably farcical, crippled by what is possibly the worst performance of Salman’s chequered career. Tubelight means well, an anti-war movie that illustrates the pointlessness of battle and the importance of not actively hating those you are at war with, and while its simplistic message is timely and admirable, the film is rendered unwatchable because of the leading man.

At the outset, one must warn people that Tubelight is a departure from your regular Salman Khan mass entertainers. Here Bollywoods darling-star plays a child-man who doesnt take off his shirt or flex his biceps. So the audience going in for this one, must first invest belief (or should that be disbelief?) in this age of innocence offering from Kabir Khan, whose past outings Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan were more commercially-wired.

Tubelight presents Salman in full Forrest Gump mode. Laxman, the golden-hearted simpleton, not only loves his brother Bharat (Sohail Khan), he also teaches us to love our neighbours, during peace or strife. It matters not where the borders are; love conquers all. The message is perfect, especially apt for these manic times. The messenger is far from. The effort, on Salmans part, to come off slow-witted, shows in every frame. Its all feels constructed, and on the surface, with no nuance.

Director Kabir Khan admitted in an interview that the objective of this cinematic tribute was to make the inspiring story accessible to a larger audience. And while Salman fans across the world would make for a populous target, inflicting them with this preachy tale of leaning on yakeen to get through life could be a tad misleading. But then, were speaking to those who feel that hanging ones shades over the back of ones collar is the path to ultimate glory.

On the whole, TUBELIGHT come across as a colossal disappointment as it fails to engross the audiences due to its wafer thin plot. At the Box-Office, the movie will take a jumpstart due to Salman Khans star power and accelerate over the weekend and the extended weekend [due to the Eid festivities], post which, the business will see a sizeable drop.

Kabir Khan gets most things right. Tubelight is about love, trust, magic and belief. It’s like a tonic for weary souls. You will find yourself interacting with the film and characters. Tubelight is a wannabe Forrest Gump. It gets slow and monotonous after a while. The pace is slow and it drags in parts. The songs are partly to be blamed for slowing the film down.

Tubelight isnt a bad film, it has a lot of things going for it, but it is heavily weighed down by the weight of the superstar plastered across its poster. In an effort to make Salman emote and make us cry, Kabir has lost track of the story arc. Tubelight has a message that resonates with current times keep the faith and believe in the good. Salmans sincere and heartfelt performance in the film will definitely move you. Keep that box of tissues handy! .
