Went with minimal expectations for #UjdaChaman and came back pleasantly surprised… Some expertly handled sequences and light moments keep you hooked… Director Abhishek Pathak has the qualities of a fine storyteller… Sunny Singh and Manvi Gagroo are wonderful.

The biggest problem with Ujda Chaman is that the film wants to have it both ways first make you laugh with cheesy jokes about sex and virginity and then deliver an important social message about why we shouldnt judge people by their looks. But by the time this message arrives, we can barely listen because weve been beaten senseless by the lackluster plot and the bizarrely loud and intrusive background score. Its too late to be woke literally and figuratively.Ondu Motteya Kathe had a sweetness and poignancy that has been lost in translation. In one scene, Apsara looks at Chaman and thinks tum toh khud pure ke pure compromise lagte ho. Thats pretty much what this film is.

On the whole, Ujda Chaman is definitely not the laugh riot it ought to have been and is, in that sense, a very disappointing fare. Also, the fact that the other film on the same topic of premature balding €” Bala €” is slated for release next week itself, will tell on the box-office performance of Ujda Chaman.

The dialogues are questionable. Ladka pure hai is taken to mean that the lad has had no sex, and repeating it several times over is meant to funny. Virgin kya hota hai, is another sample. If that kind of crass, tasteless stuff makes you laugh, well, heres the perfect film for you.

There are too many missed opportunities here. An oddball romance between two unlikely partners would have proved a far better bet for Ujda Chaman than focussing on the list of socially embarrassing situations premature baldness can cause. This could have been one of those rambunctious rib-tickling comedies, but alas, it turns out to be as much a retro-fit as a toupee on a bald head.

To put it baldly, Ujda Chaman is just that: a cinematic approximation of a garden gone to seed owing to lack of clean water and pure air. The film scrapes the bottom of the barrel in search of inspiration – and laughs – but fails to find the roots that it needs to attain proper plumage.Avoid. Spare yourself a bad hair day at the multiplex.

Ujda Chaman is a poor adaptation (Danish Singh) of the 2017 Kannada film Ondu Motteya Kathe (Story of Egghead) directed by Abhishek Pathak. The director amps up the background music and sound effects in an attempt to underline the lame attempts at humour and also forgoes finesse and subtlety in storytelling.

‘Ujda Chaman’ is the official remake of the 2017 Kannada film, ‘Ondu Motteya Kathe’. While the first half of the film tries to be quirky and comic, the ‘very loud Delhi family’ humour and the even louder background score are a sore point. In fact, the background score ensures that there is no scope for subtlety or gentle humour. And the first part hammers the ridicule of a bald person scene after scene to the point of exhaustion. In the second half, the film mostly plays out as a drama and perhaps, redeems itself to a certain extent here by bringing in the message of accepting people for who they are. And looking beyond their outward appearances. But overall, it is the weak writing that doesn’t explore beyond the germ of the idea that makes the story flip.

All said and done, Ujda Chaman lacks what it takes to be an entertaining film. The humour falls flat, no strong supporting cast to keep you hooked, a story that can be done with in a single line all of this is churned and processed for 120 minutes frustrating the life out of you.Two Stars!

Losing hair or being of a certain shape may not be a handicap unless we want it to be is the films tediously delivered moral. But its surely enough to alter ones self worth. Ujda Chaman couldve been a comic account that captures this peculiar sentiment by drawing hilarity from its socially awkward circumstances. But it barely scrapes beneath the surface and lacks depth in depiction.
