Inspired by a French science fiction comic series that has been around since 1967 and has inspired, among others, Star Wars and Bessons own The Fifth Element, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has two fairly original and enjoyable lead actors, one great scene involving the third dimension, at least half a dozen interesting inter-galactic species €” and lots of space and time it doesnt know how to fill.

A case could be made for a better lead pair lending to a better film. But Valerian sees Luc Besson playing with the latest CGI technology like a child in a toy store. The audience is left with ocular diabetes and hardly any savoury storytelling an essential ingredient that turned some of his films like La Femme Nikita & L©on: The Professional into cult classics. Nevertheless; the visual sugar-high never killed anyone, and as far as escapist blockbusters go, Valerian and The City of A Thousand Planets is as imaginative and spectacular as they come. Just keep your mind switched off and put your 3D glasses on.

There are, of course, monsters, killer robots, misunderstood villains, and a slew of special guest stars including the shape-shifting Bubbles, played by an incandescent Rihanna, which all go towards soothing the hurt and burn caused by other, recent sci-fi spectacles. The plot stumbles along, but the movie’s sheer spectacle and chemistry of its cast (hats off to Daan for growing up so well and Clara for being able to act despite her beauty) and their badinage makes Valerian a necessary summer watch.

Director Luc Besson himself has penned the script.There are so many stories within one main story, that it becomes kind of tedious to sit through the film. So many side missions in one main mission and so many characters make it all the more incomprehensible and sometimes boring. And yes, the film is too predictable.While Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is visually stunning, but that is not enough to keep the viewer hooked on to it. Infants who stare at cartoon programs on TV even when you put the television on mute might enjoy watching this.
