Addresses important issues, but action takes precedence after a point… Solid first half, impactful interval block, weak second hour and an overstretched finale

On the whole, Vedaa is a fair fare but it is an odd marriage of mass and class cinema. It will definitely score in single-screen cinemas and mass centres. Business in multiplexes will be limited. The holiday weekend and the lack of new releases in the forthcoming weeks will help its business.

The film, on its part, goes all out and throws a few punches in the right direction. Some parts of the battle that it wages go overboard and last way too long.

The challenge facing a film which wants to front a female lead while taking care that the big male action hero is never down-faced is clear in the way ‘Vedaa’ is constructed: the title belongs to her, the story which moves everything into high gear is hers, but when push comes to multiple shoves, the plot-line gives into the demands of macho-hero-doing-hero-things, truly one of Bollywood’s besetting banes.

The film’s gritty texture and tension are well-etched out and so are some of the evocative scenes. And songs like ‘Zaroorat Se Zyada’ blend in well to the mood. But a few notes in the film don’t ring true – especially the long drawn out and convoluted climax, a couple of oddly inserted songs and some scenes come across as staged. Many portions are predictable, and follow the formulaic route, but the hardcore action sequences, especially in the second half, keep the adrenaline rush going.

In summary, Vedaa provides an engaging experience despite its shortcomings. For those seeking a fresh action film with an emotional narrative, this is a worthwhile choice.

‘Vedaa’ is worth a watch, especially for Sharvari’s stellar performance and the film’s compelling subject matter. Despite its flaws, it deserves extra points for tackling such a relevant topic with such a talented cast.

Despite its flaws, Vedaa remains an entertaining and thought-provoking watch, effectively engaging the audience with its strong themes and compelling storyline. While the climax may not fully measure up to the film’s potential when compared to others in the genre, the journey it takes you on is undeniably gripping, making Vedaa a worthwhile experience.

There’s no shying away in Aseem Arrora’s script from the horrors that await Vedaa, just as there is no plausible outcome of her rebellion. Vedaa joins a long list of films which, rather than presenting a lived experience of caste, not only dumb down this form of social stratification but also offer simplistic – and untenable – solutions.
