 Veere Di Wedding channels everything from Bridesmaids to Sex and the City, but the script (by Mehul Suri and Nidhi Mehra) never lifts off the ground. And its not hard to see why. The films notions of feminism feel misguided. Its idea of women cutting loose is basically women acting like badly behaved men. So the ladies here swear like sailors, drop f-bombs and coarse Hindi gaalis. They talk freely about sex and orgasms, and drink till they pass out and wake up in strangers beds. None of it wouldve been a problem if it didnt feel so labored. Or frankly if the film delivered even a smidgeon of fun. But Veere Di Wedding isnt fun. Actually its the opposite of fun its a slog.

On the whole, Veere Di Wedding has taken a flying start and it will keep everyone smiling despite the fact that a section of the audience will be critical of the content. In commercial terms, this one will turn out to be a richly rewarding proposal.

Friends are the new family. Weddings are now as much about parents giving away the bride as they are about friends entrusting her to a man they approve of. Veere Di Wedding gets this fantastic bond right, and gives us four dramatically different kinds of women with agency and spirit. Nobody stands in the way of their decisions. Some girls will always choose to argue, just as some mothers will always choose to harangue. We haven’t seen these ladies on screen before, and they will serve as an awakening. India could do with an alarm call. Sometimes we need a movie to tell us what an orgasm means.

Net net, Veere Di Wedding is a fun ride, which squeezes past its creaky tropes and partial squelchiness by some smart casting choices, and perky performances. And lines which connect. Shaadi toh foundation hai jhagde ki, says a character, and I found myself chuckling. As did many people around me.

There’s no real rebellion, just a consuming love for fashion and faux feminism where every zinger flying out of their mouth sounds like something you’ve heard on a sitcom or favourited on your Pinterest wall. For a while though, the unapologetic tone of its ‘Baahar se sati andar se slutty’ shallowness actually works.

The four leading ladies break the proverbial glass ceiling with their sexy stilettos. Weve rarely seen women on screen who are so uninhibited about their life, sexuality and desires. In that respect, Veere Di Wedding is a brave effort indeed. This film will find an appeal with the younger generations who can relate to the discussions and dilemmas of these veeres.

Veere Di Wedding is more than a chick flick for sure despite the fact that the antics of the four friends and their sartorial choices (come on it’s a Sonam Kapoor film after all) is what keeps us entertained throughout. But there is enough gravitas wherever required and all in all you come out feeling as if you’ve got a peek into each of their respective lives with all its complexities. Veere perfectly balances out the laugh-out-moments with the real life issues each of the characters are grappling with. Nowhere does it sag or go over the top with the emotions.

The story and the twists arent life altering or shocking, but the ladies and their kinship is organic enough to be believable. While the first half moves at a quick pace, the dramatic twists in the second half seemed a bit forced. But director Ghosh re-gains control towards the climax and ties it up well. While this film isnt going to make you any wiser in love or life, Veere Di Wedding will go down as an engaging film that doesnt hurt the eye.
