It would seem that even the filmmakers, including the lead, weren’t quite sure of their product. Because, mild spoiler alert when in doubt, pull ‘Stree’ out? A ‘bhootni’ pops up in a climactic set-piece, referencing Rao’s most popular film : will he ever be able to get rid of her?

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video is best left alone. It is a comedy that groans and croaks under the unbearable lightness of its unabashed silliness.

But this film has no reason to exist in the 90s. It could be a film about a couple whose video goes viral on social media. But then, the makers felt hunting for a CD would make for a far more entertaining crowd pleaser with an absolute cringe reference to Rao’s own Stree. Also, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video never earns its nostalgic fragrance.

The ensemble film had the potential to be a comedy of errors like Priyadarshan’s past hits, but it’s way too inconsistent and vague in its approach and intent. The story lacks clarity about what it sets to achieve. It tries too hard to be funny, nostalgic (90’s songs are inserted repeatedly) and moralistic but the climax gets way too bizarre for your liking. The film suddenly shifts gear and gets into an activism mode before resorting to horror comedy. Two mimics parading as Suniel Shetty serve as the final nail in the coffin.

While the trailer may have raised your hopes for the Rajkummar-Tripti starrer, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video is worth skipping. It is lacking in almost every department and will result in you leaving the theatres with a dissatisfied soul and headache. Watch at your own risk.

Overall, the exposure of the true villain (which is unexpected and comes in again as a device to enhance the film’s “social relevance” while actually only adding to the runtime!) is too protracted. What could have been an exhilarating comedy becomes a serious social drama. On the plus side, most of the one-liners are hilarious, like the “do lakh ki jagah do leash” line and the one-sided conversation between the ghost and the coup

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video feels like a mix of Govinda-era slapstick, Ramsay Brothers’ horror, and a dash of Priyadarshan-style comedy. While kudos to Raaj Shaandilyaa for attempting something different, the execution falls short.
