Why was an Indian so devoted to the Queen of England, who ruled his country? (He even happily kisses her feet). Was he naive or just an opportunist? What was he like as a person? The narrative reduces Abdul to being a mere spectator and that’s its biggest flaw. Also, the film falters as it abruptly changes gear and transforms into a tedious tragedy from a cross-cultural comedy.Despite an uneven narrative and historical inaccuracies, Victoria and Abdul is a delightful film that deserves to be watched for Judi Dench.

Theres an odd sense of misguided chronicling in the film, which is strange considering its directed by Stephen Frears who has made rather lovely films like High Fidelity. The lack of irony, or satirical bite from his earlier film The Queen ultimately hurts Victoria and Abdul, more a missed opportunity than a piece of entertainment.

Whats Good: Presence of Judi Dench, the tall doe-eyed Ali Fazal & some strikingly shot sequences. Whats Bad: Fact of converting a fascinating tale into a crawling big yawn. Loo Break: As many times as Ali Fazal uses the term Her Majesty Watch or Not?: Only for sincere performances by Judi Dench & Ali Fazal (Nothing else!)

But dont let that fool you. Dont be taken in by the delightful sight of Queen Victoria speaking in broken Hindi, and dont fall for a dreamy-eyed Ali Fazal reciting the decadent history of the Taj Mahal. Victoria & Abdul is a shameful attempt to normalise evil. Everyone involved could, and should, have done better.

Shrabani Basu, on whose book this film is based, rightly underlines that the story of the friendship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant Abdul Karim, €œsounds like a fantasy, but isnt€. Unfortunately, as told by this film, through an actor whose Abdul is as two-dimensional as a cardboard, with as little insight into the man transported into an alien world, Victoria and Abdul plays out exactly like a fantasy.
