Vishwaroop 2 is a spy thriller and it serves up some good genre aspects. The combat scenes, the stunts and the props all look like they belong to a big-ticket Hollywood film. But for all its frills, the film feels too stretched. A lot of the dialogue-heavy scenes featuring Shekhar Kapur and Anant Mahadevan dont really make the cut. Vishwaroop 2 is a classic example of overkill. This multi-lingual film has been shot in both Hindi and Tamil. And despite having some genuinely good moments, the film tries to put forth a little too much, a little too quickly.

In the first edition, the veteran star-actor led from the front: here the dirty soldier turned bloody espionage agent is all thundery lines like main mazhab nahin mulk ke liye khoon bahaata hoon. But even he cant rise above the shockingly inept script, which he rescues only in a few places, when his trademark intelligent, wry self-awareness manages to kick in. The rest can be safely ignored.

On the whole, VISHWAROOP II is a highly avoidable flick. The film has too many tracks and the narration and execution is flawed and weak. Also at the box office, the film will have a tough time.

The long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Vishwaroopam (Hindi title: Vishwaroop 2) is an empty shell. As tiresome as the first part was exhilarating, it is an incoherent muddle that is not even middling in terms of quality. Sexagenarian superstar Kamal Haasan, also the writer and director of this bloated mess, clearly used up all his ammo in the first go. Vishwaroop 2 is left working with low-yield leftovers. The world has moved on, terrorism has gotten much worse, and Mission Impossible has just delivered its best instalment ever. Vishwaroop 2, hopelessly stuck in the past, is a step backwards.

Overall, Vishwaroop 2 is at best an average affair. If you saw and loved the first part just go for it. But if you haven’t seen the prequel, you’ll be confused throughout. So, watch it only if you have seen the first part. Kamal Haasan is a legend and this film proves it once again. He holds the screen like no other actor. Watch it for his screen presence, watch it for it concludes what we saw in the first part.P.S – It would’ve made more sense if it would’ve released closer to its prequel’s release.

Toward the end of Vishwaroop 2, Nirupama says to Salim who is celebrating his own evilness, ‘God will punish you, dekhna. And no sooner does she complete that sentence, than Kamal Haasan flies in through the window and in three swift motions, dispenses justice.’God is here!’ Haasan seems to saying. And he now wants your support.

Unintentional humour is present throughout the film, it requires a special talent to make you laugh regardless of whether the scene is emotional, action or romantic, leaving sarcasm apart there are very neatly choreographed action sequences at places but they get overshadowed by the tedious story-line.

Yet in the sequel, its almost shocking to see how little is done with a character that was built up so much. We expected Omar to be a tidal wave. What we get, instead, is barely a ripple. Add that to particularly tacky production design and uninspiring visuals, you realise that its easy for someone to mistake the first part as the newer film. By the end of Vishwaroopam 2, weve seen so many bombs being planted, only for them to be defused. Whats another 100 more?
