It really takes nerves of steel to get through the new X-Men movie. Youd think the franchise was on solid ground, particularly after the one-two punch of 2011s First Stand and 2014s Days of Future Past, but X-Men: Apocalypse is overlong, overpopulated, and often just flat-out boring. The X-Men movies were about more than just their action scenes. They were smart films that always put character and story above spectacle. They even offered commentary on issues that felt recognizable in the real world. Such a shame the architect of this universe appears to have gone the Zack Snyder way.

But the tricky part begins once the meet-and-greet is over. With a horde of characters, Singer gets overambitious. He wants to say a lot, but there is little plot to help him do that. The flaw lies not in the acting prowess of the cast or in the flattering action, but in the screenplay. The baddies are not menacing enough, especially Apocalypse, whose undefined powerful persona runs out of steam. This is strictly for the fans!

In a world now over-stuffed with comic-book movies, X-Men: Apocalypse is far from being the finest movie yet may well rank among the most comic-booky. For some of us, thats all that matters. There are too many movies out there Magneto may like; this one is something Professor X would dig.

On the whole, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE checks all the correct boxes, be it action, drama, funny moments and scenes and well hidden Easter eggs/ references to other characters. The film does get a little predictable in the second half, but with crisp editing and spot on characterization, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE delivers what one expects from it.

The first half establishes itself a bit slowly but manages to keep you hooked with the character detailing. Apocalypses script finally answers the age old question of Why is professor Charles bald? and mind you, it is interesting how it happens. The only problem is that since Singer crams too many characters in one film, his ambitious act also disappoints.X-Men Apocalypse falls short of its predecessors when it comes to entertainment. It is strictly for the X-Men fans since the rest would find themselves highly confused!

With so much superhero content out in theaters it becomes more a monthly exercise and less a movie event for a film buff to watch a film from the genre. X Men: Apocalypse is yet another dark and gritty superhero film with a villain proclaiming the end of the world, but thanks to Bryan Singers direction and some unexpected horror themes it becomes a passably entertaining watch.

There are so many characters from the past, present and future that its hard to keep track. There are also desperate attempts at humour and cheap plays aimed directly at the fanclubs. At almost two-and-a-half hours, in spite of collapsing cities, new characters and a Wolverine cameo, X-Men: Apocalypse offers so little over such a long running time.

Marred by sloppy screnwriting and an editor who was probably kinder than he was talented, X:Men peters down to an insipid end. And this, by a long, long shot, is the reason why the film cannot bounce back towards the end. They really ought to have slapped an X rating on this film. That way, there would have been little risk of young viewers being scarred for life.
